DC is the opposite of NY in that it feels much less oppressive/overwhelming than NY. Buildings aren’t so tall, less crowded, very clean, doesn’t smell. I’m not much of a city person and I like it here

That’s exactly what I was thinking! It’s like all of the good parts about the east coast which is what attracting me to it
Portland, Denver, Seattle, Boston in no order
Atlanta rail system is not very convenient. Most people drive everywhere.
I lived and worked in the perimeter before leaving ATL, and sure, you can take targeted trips to and from work and the airport using MARTA, but if you’re looking for a rail experience close to what the NYC subway system offers, Atlanta isn’t it.

DC metro is great.
I would not recommend Atlanta, particularly if you don’t want to drive. That was one of the main reasons I moved from there. DC, however, is great!
Chicago has the only public transit system worth a damn in this country other than NYC. Many neighborhoods where a car is not needed

Second Chicago. I’m not from there but have stayed for extended periods with family in the burbs and gone into the city to work in my NY Firm’s office. Always pleasantly surprised how quickly you can be out of the concrete jungle in a good way.
I grew up in the Midwest, went to school in Philly and now live in DC. I love both Philly and DC. Both are very walkable, have public transit, great food scene, etc. DC is much cleaner and the metro is better (when it’s running at full capacity, which it isn’t right now). DC is far more expensive though.
Seattle. Lots of public transportation. And no income taxes and great outdoor opportunities if that’s a thing for you. But housing costs are not cheap (though coming from NY will be helpful in that regard).

I’m from the northeast, and I cannot imagine a better commute than the one I have in TX. It’s a ten minute drive from my garage to work. In my own car. Before law school I was working in a northeast city and took the subway to work. I remember feeling so cool my first day. That lasted like a week lmao. It absolutely sucks. But you do you, plenty of reasons not to live in TX, this is just a new one for me!
How about New Jersey?
