How do you know these cases aren’t also counted in the COVID-19 mortality numbers? Given that pneumonias are a common complication of COVID-19, I would think many of these encounters also have a COVID-19 diagnosis. The numbers can be skewed either way. For example: a patient who develops a bacterial pneumonia, secondary to COVID-19, and ends up expiring from respiratory failure, organ failure, or sepsis. Depending on how the diagnoses are coded and what is listed as the cause of death, the data can reflect multiple situations unless the methodology is clearly represented.

The #’s below the tweet were from the CDC. He was offering his opinion. The increase in pneumonia doesn’t make any sense. You have any explanations?

I did a deep dive into prior years vs current year deaths in the US. Beginning of May we were up about 70,000 deaths from prior years. Covid numbers seemed accurate if you factor in fewer fatal car crashes or gun fights at Chuck E. Cheese.

Could this be from a lot of people with pneumonia being afraid to get treatment/couldn’t get treatment because of Covid?

Doubt it. If anything, people with pneumonia would be more likely to seek out testing and treatment because they’d want to know if it’s COVID related and they would get high priority in hospitals because they are likely sicker than your average flu patients and the first thing sensible doctors would do is to screen them for COVID (if tests were available).

Any chance this is just an interpretation of data where multiple causes are listed? IE: pneumonia is listed 1st and Covid further down the list? Or is Covid not listed at all?

Sorry OP - saw that you’ve posted the actual CDC data source. My comment was referring to what looked like twitter/reddit post without data source. Had nothing to do with fake news or not, I’m just not in the habit of taking a Twitter seriously because of the amount of misinformation and false numbers. This includes our president.
So to your final sentence, yes KPMG keeps hiring the finest. People who like I do not take everything on twitter as the gospel, and question authenticity from both sides.
