To all the single moms and dads: how did you deal with the struggle of child care & work hours. I will make a challenging career move into a strategic role and I realized: the day has not enough hours (the night doesn't either). What worked for you (more nannies, baby sitters, etc)? How do you deal with a job which requires 60-80 hrs?

I outsource a lot too. I’m a single mother but I had to try slow down on my job, even if I’m not getting stellar reviews anymore because I’m too busy fighting a custody battle with nex between working full time and taking care of a toddler morning and nights. You have to find a way to manage and find what fits you the best

I think it is so tough to know that you can do better under different circumstances. I wish you the best for a fair divorce settlement and afterwards simply peace.

Try to make friends who can help you. Living close to my parents works for me. They feel so bad for me so they’re always helping. I had friends help as well.

That works quite well for me too, but of course I can't use it daily.

Not a single parent but we still outsource a ton and I would highly recommend - we literally never cook except sometimes eggs or pancakes on the weekends (we do a food service for us and the baby), we have a nanny, cleaner, etc.

I’m in nyc so there are a lot of options but mine is called Jennies Kitchen and it’s a home cooking style place that I deliver twice per week. Food is precooked, and takes me 5 mins to heat up Options could include Cook Unity, Freshly, etc. and if you want something specifically for the baby there are a ton of options too depending on age (Little Spoon, Yumi, Tiny Organics, etc), but we just all eat the same stuff

like

Can you work from home?

Yes, still a I am the only person around - they seek attention as well as someone needs to take care of their homework. I juggled it 6 yrs alone, but with non-stop meetings plus the workload, it will be a challenge.

Single parent, I would say hire a solid babysitter/nanny. I don’t work as many hours as you would but I will say, being that you’re going to be working that many hours make sure you’re intentional about quality time with your kid(s). Good luxk

I always thought I would prefer a nanny if I could afford it. Well we went the daycare route and, depending on age of child, would always recommend this over nanny. The social interaction has been so good for my daughter and it’s shocking how much she learns. Have backup options because they will get sick while building their immunity- which is a whole other challenge but will be good in the long term. Just my thoughts and suggestions based on my experience but I hope you find a solution that works with your family. It’s not easy to balance a growing career and young family. Have patience and grace with yourself and your responsibilities!

Mine started at 5 months and 4 months. If you have options, my youngest is now 8 months and he’s getting to be pretty active and interested in everything so for me this would’ve been a good time to start to get into more activities and stimulation!

Daycare? Both of my girls went to the same center starting in the infant room. You can also get someone to pick up and help at home for a couple hours while you finish up work? Also, I know someone who hired someone to come to the house in the morning to get the kids out the door and to daycare/school if mornings are an issue.

like

I had daycare, a nanny in the evenings who did pickup and was there until bedtime (or later, if needed), and a cleaning lady. Now my kid is older and I work mostly from home so I send her to school and aftercare. I still have a cleaning lady. No nanny but some occasional babysitting.

like

I didn't have one but a friend's family had a house manager. Kid would go to daycare for socialization, house manager would take care of grocery shopping, other errands, managing family calendar, laundry, cleaning up, chauffeuring the kid (but not watching them), you might be able to find one willing to cook, I think the role of a household manager definitely can be flexible depending on your needs

I have daycare/preschool for my two; a lady who cleans my house once every two weeks; lawn care and my groceries are delivered. I still am about to reduce my hours so that I’m not riding on fumes.

We have friends that have 2 nannies. Seems to work well for them.

Thank you all for those really helpful comments. Balancing quality time with the kids and a career is though.

Would this constitute a divorce? Spouse always agrees to provide more money to his ex-wife for every scenario although he is paying a significant amount of child support. It’s so frustrating because he reduces his household contributions and doesn’t bother to change his discretionary spending even after I mention it. I make more money so I already cover majority of the expenses. The only thing I request is that he provides his share. This time it’s a small amount but I’m sick of it.

Am I overreacting in this scenario? My aunt passed away this week. The entire extended family is vaccinated and coming together this weekend for her memorial gathering & funeral. My older sister flew in from NYC and didn’t tell anyone that she had a fever the past few days. She has not been tested for Covid, and exposed my father who picked her up from the airport. He is making her get a Covid test today. I don’t think she should attend any event & potentially expose older family members. AITA?
