The best ad people don’t just reflect culture. They create it.

CD1 is correct. I got into this business because I wanted to shape pop culture, not because I wanted to just keep up with it. As they say, the best way to know the future is to create it.
In my experience, the current batch of young people do not know any culture before the present. For example, I met someone who worked A&R at Sony Music. The Cure came on in the background. She never heard of them. This opened up a conversation about music. I was shocked by what I discovered. Despite having Spotify and unlimited access to nearly every artist and band, she had zero knowledge of music before the year 2000. Her literal job is scouting for Sony Music and she doesn’t even know music, which is nuts. In conversations with younger coworkers about music and pop culture, they didn’t really know about anything before 2000, either. Like almost nothing. Which is weird because they’d had the internet since they were really little. When I was in my early 20s, I definitely knew of music and movies and pop culture that came out way before my time, and so did everyone else I knew.

It’s not just the people who’ve there forever. I work with a shocking number of people who don’t know what’s happening in today’s culture. Hipsters are limited in their scope of knowledge.
Vinyl sales are way up recently. I once witnessed a millennial put a needle on a record. She put it on the inside towards the center, assuming it played outward.
Awwww. Cute.
Agreed. That and this industry is pretty brutal on veterans. Reinventing one self to keep up is not easy

Great point. What are the best sites to soak up culture? Been looking to update my list lately.
