To hiring managers, why is networking such a big deal in this day and age? Do you find that candidates who do zoom chats with 3 employees and get referrals are much stronger than those who just submit applications?
(Note: I mean this sort of shallow networking as distinct from having worked closely with someone on the team. I understand why that referral carries weight)

To be honest with you, in my experience it’s solely because a referral got HR to actually talk to you and send your resume to a hiring manager. When I was a hiring manager we had tons of applicants who just got instantly vetoed by checking a box “incorrectly” on indeed and HR would throw the resume in the trash. It came to the point where I told HR to let every resume through and I would choose who they screened because they never sent any candidates forward. Not saying that’s the whole reason, but forcing HR people to send resumes to a hiring manager will get you a lot farther than just letting HR decide. With the HR I worked with, they typically knew nothing about an ideal candidate and just chose the path of least work, which was disqualifying the candidate for any reason.

Networking has always existed, including shallow networking in-person or over the phone. It’s gotten more normal to accept and have these types of interactions virtually given the push to hybrid work. A candidate that shows this level of initiative relative to candidates who don’t is thought to be able to navigate organizational structures (maybe even across geographies) better than the candidate who didn’t try. The candidate who got those interactions interested either time, money, or both into researching the role, the people, how they related to the position, and how to communicate that.

I haven’t had a large or tenured enough sample personally to tell you if it’s true. It’s also difficult to control for this hypothesis, especially given the number of confounding variables that go into overall performance (eg technical skills, on the job mentoring, etc)

Hi Everyone - I was hoping someone could throw some light on the kind of work trust and safety does. I see a lot of open roles - managers, senior strategists etc. I have a top 20 MBA and about 8 years of big 4 experience in consulting - would this be the right kind of role to get into? Or is it more engineering?

So I have been made an offer by a company I like but it’s pretty similar to my current package (I also like where I am). The recruiter is pretty intense and is pitting me against another candidate but says I’m the number one choice and is asking me for a number to say yes “but not too high or the team will look at the other candidate”
I’m close to send them to get stuffed. I’m also awaiting a promo and interview feedback from Google. Any advice?
