My first year at a startup was kind of bananas working probably 60-80 hours a week as a solo generalist with support from an outside firm.

After a few years (and the company more stable) most weeks are now more like 40-50 hours, with some projects causing hours to spike back up for a few weeks at a time. I’ve finally gotten to the point of hiring a person or two, which will help with WLB.

Net - I think it can vary widely depending on the circumstances.

Personally I did find it satisfying. Partly because of the nature of the work, and partly because my kids were mostly grown up. I wasn’t missing out on as much in the way of family time.

There’s no such thing as a perfect job.

I know there are definitely worse out there so it’s hard to put my foot down and resign, I could just stick it out for a year but am feeling demotivated and too exhausted to do anything else but sleep after hours/weekends. Have you ever started working somewhere and although nothing overtly wrong or terrible about the place / colleagues, it just didn’t feel like the right fit & if so, what did you do?

Thinking about jumping ship. I have no problem selling work, but am starting to think more about wlb now that I've hung out with my family for a year. What firms are best known for the wlb/comp sweet spot in payer/provider health care? Not as concerned about speed to partner - if it happens, great.

When I ask my manager for advice about how to do something, he usually just tells me I'll "figure it out yourself." But when it comes down to it, he doesn't help me at all by doing that—he just makes me feel like an idiot. And then when I do figure it out myself and bring the answer back to him, he won't even look at it! He'll just say something like "Oh yeah, thank you," and give me another assignment.

I recently got a new job at a startup. I have little to no experience in reviewing commercial contracts but the sales pitch was that they are going to bring my area of expertise inhouse and until then, I would learn and help with contract reviews. Initially I thought this would be a great opportunity but now overwhelmed & doubting if I made the right choice. Learning a new area is so hard(!!). Esp so b/c I still get recruiter reach out for opportunities that better fit my profile.
