Gotta prove your worth. Age has nothing to do with it.
Unfortunately years of experience doesn't equal skill level.

They're likely doing it because the senior they're putting in lead has experienced leading that type of workstream before.
people coming from industry, even with an MBA, generally take a year or so ramp up to consulting. There's likely been feedback that you may not be ready to lead the workstream.
Don't sweat it, this is your opportunity to learn and show your skills so you're in position for the next time. And don't spend your time trying to undermine the senior or make yourself look better then them, it'll only reflect poorly on you.
Definitely wonāt try to undermine them (project timeline is looking real right so weād really need to work our assess off as a team). Just worried that Iād be seen as playing a āsupport onlyā role and would hurt my case for promotion in the next cycle.
The other consultant has been at the firm longer than you. This is not surprising at all. As a post-MBA senior who started at my firm at age 33, all of my direct superiors are younger than me, always.
Itās really just something you have to get over. Itās hard at first, but once you understand that each person is just forging their own path and reframe, you will get past it and focus on your work. Younger and older colleagues can learn from you and vice versa. Be humble. The younger person managing you may feel awkward too, you never know. Be a team player.
Totally understandable! It was hard to adjust to reporting to younger people for me at diest, but something you get used to over time.
Get used to it
Could be a couple reasons: The other senior has proved himself to the partner, is known as a SME in that particular type of work, or is one of the partnerās favorites. Could also be trying to make a case for promotion. Either way, donāt worry too much about it, do well and there is space for you to shine too. The other senior is probably worried about f-ing up
Yeah, it was a little weird that they staffed two non-junior consultant of the same level on the project to begin with. Wanted to make sure it doesnāt prohibit opportunity to shine as well since Iād definitely want to make a case for promotion too.

What Iām reading is the other person has 2 yoe at the firm and you have less than 1. That person is more of a known quantity than you
I used to get this from new MBAās and I could actually care less about the MBA.
MBA is no different than undergrad, it is a means to get the job. How you use it and how effective you are is all that matters.
Yeah. I gotta say age doesnāt factor into my staffing choice one but. Maybe the other person has worked with the partner before!

It may be weird for the younger person too. The best you can do is go in with an open mind and assume this is not a slight towards you and thereās room for everyone to shine.
Thanks for sharing this. Iāve had to manage older folks when working in industry and can speak first hand how they can f*ck with you. Wouldnāt wish that on others.

At the end of the day, age means nothing. You're comparing ~5 YOE to 3 YOE, which is barely a blip on the radar, especially since you're both the same level and the other person has more consulting experience than you do.
I suppose it makes sense in the long term that 5vs3 yoe isnāt significant. Definitely not easy to see it that way without having asked around here.
My manager is younger than me and is a rockstar. Couldnāt care less how old he was.
