Own business would have high variation, plus initial investment. I would say that $200K a year average, after paying for the cost of capital from my initial investment would be enough. This is because I would also be growing my business, which I could sell for some millions later on the road and retire
Think people are missing the point. $120K wouldn’t be the ceiling, it would just be the activation energy you need to make the hop and grow the business full time

I recently read a report and it says half the work force want to be their own boss. If I know that I can grow my income, I am okay with anything above $70K as my wife is also working. That covers us comfortably in terms of basic like mortgage etc.
