Not trying to downplay the pandemic. But the calculation of the mortality stat is patently flawed. With so many undiagnosed/minor cases, the actual mortality stat is closer to 1%. This stat is even lower when you only look at ppl under 50.
I’d argue the one point that needs to be emphasized more (especially for those who are taking this too lightly) is the amount of people who recover but have permanent damage to their respiratory system. If people realize they might have to live on half a lung for the rest of their lives, they’d feel a lot less “invincible” and start taking this more seriously.
We need to remember the Stalin quote "The death of a man is a tragedy. The death of a million is a statistic." What makes this virus catch our attention is just how incredibly contagious it is. Like Pink Eye (Conjunctivitis) contagious, except this one can kill you and has proven to do so. 3.4% seems like a low, inconsequential number, but given how everyone is basically 3 degrees of separation away from each other, the impact from this, even with this mortality rate, will be huge. To put it in perspective, the Chicxulu Crater, which is the impact site of the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs, is only half of a thousandth of a percent (0.005%) of the surface of the Earth, but the impact it caused is what it's known for.
You’re right. But 1% of the US population is still 3 million people. Which is a lot.
The concern is that this seems to be a higher infection rate and so left unchecked, I doubt it would stop at 60m. The other factor is that the current rate seems to be that 5-10% require hospitalization. Even though most of these survive, the US doesn’t have 3-6m emergency beds with ventilators.
You would be surprised at how many people don’t understand the concept of the death rate 3.4% = (total deaths)/(Total tested positive cases). I have witnessed first hand someone who thought the death rate is determined by some “super smart scientists performing advanced chemistry, mathematics, and blah blah blah” and is some how able to “scientifically measure” the deadlines of a disease as if there is some sort of high tech “death rate scale” you can weigh the virus on. 🤣🤣
Did you notice how quickly the death count went up with the testing count today? It’s not like the mass of people JUST died overnight, while tests were processed overnight. They are only releasing numbers that don’t scare the crap out of everyone right now. It’ll change later.
