It isn’t pleasant for anyone but different people tolerate the pain differently.

Experience. Learning to deal with difficult situations, balance expectations and push yourself. I’m young enough and don’t have kids yet, and my wife is understanding of my goals. I don’t plan to do this forever, I plan to go in-house/to the business side eventually. But in 6 years I’ve billed an aggregate of about 1200 hours over budget (2000/yr). More hours means that I’ve simply seen more than some of my peers, and that lines me up for my choice of clients and work.

At least at my firm, working that much one or two years solidifies you as a go-to, and no one will ever question you if you say no or dial back. In the end, you still need to find some balance to stay happy, and I do. I have hobbies, and I’m happily married for 5 years. I just have busy periods and I maximize my down time (even if that’s doing nothing)

Job security. No other reason to suffer like this.

For litigation, it is sitting in depositions all day. Trials help a lot.

Anyone else happy the US pulled WHO funding? They were giving China lip service and we were paying for it. Now at least China is paying for what they’re getting. I don’t agree with the President’s rhetoric but I’m glad we aren’t footing the bill anymore.

I recently got a job offer from a company I used to work for that has a great work/life balance and culture but has a slower track to get promoted. My current employer has a not great work/life balance but it’s much easier to get promoted. Currently 5 years into my career currently bouncing between a project lead and a discipline manager… it’s a decent pay bump- 30%. But is it worth giving up the future potential advancements ?

Started new job months ago and find the amount of cliques and high school behavior jarring. I’m the one of the few Black people at the agency and I can tell some are not happy about more non-whites coming into the space. How can I make the most of the opportunity even though it can get isolating at times?

Hi. For your L&D program, does your company allocate a number of hours/employee per year? Or do you expect your employees to do it on their own time? Basically the company just provides the course for free?

Hi Fishes, can anyone help me understand securities filing for ECVCs (in CA)? My understanding is the following: (1) you need to file 25102(f) for founders stock? (2) you need to file 25102(O) for option plans - is this when you adopt a plan or only when you first grant options (and subsequent plan increases)? (3) you need to file a Form D or comply with blue sky laws for equity financings? Thanks!

I’m a first year and things are still really slow for me. I have hardly billed in February. I am being told that things will come my way, when appropriate. Should I be concerned? My reviews have been great on assignments and our integration partner said she has no concerns/has heard great things. I’m in transactional. TIA!

Looking at 1400 hours year-end. I’ve consistently asked for work and recently let a couple partners know that’s it’s clear I won’t be making hours. Aside from the convo that I initiated, nobody has ever said anything to me about it, which is weird since they have access to hours. I’m sure it will be a topic at my review, but how likely that I’ll get fired during/shortly after my review?

I don’t know how you sociopaths do it. I’ve cried now for the third time today because of the stress and anxiety brought by this job. And I could care less about the fucking clients. All I’m doing is working to make money and feel safe. What kind of life is that? Ironically I feel trapped and terrified all the time. I don’t know how to get out. And BigLaw has soured my taste for the entire field of law. This intellectual scaffolding we’ve built is so goddamn tedious. Fuck.

I work in patent litigation. Got a cold call from guy seeking representation. Reading between the lines in about 30 seconds figured this is probably a random guy who thinks the world infringes his patent (which is not surprising as it was a cold call). I have no problem being curt with clear sales calls, but am hesitant to do it with "a prospective client" just in case I am wrong in a read and this guy turns out to be legitimate.

Any tips for how to make these folks go away without being rude?
