To those stuck on the popular vote, here's an analogy: you win football games by the number of points you score, not the amount of yards you rack up

But but, my candidate was supposed to win...lets change the rules until that happens.....oh wait that's not a democracy now is it

like

@OP yea that would be true if this was a game - but this is a democratic election that is supposed to reflect the will of the people. All the people - not just the people in swing states.

like

I completely agree that the turnout numbers in non-swing states would be different - but that is exactly the point. People are disenfranchised on both sides of the spectrum if they don't live in a handful of states - that is an outcome of the system and that is not how a democracy is supposed to work.

like

We were a very early democracy and we refused to iron out the kinks in the system.

like

Voter turnout would be very different then. Many from both sides don't vote because they understand it doesn't matter in deep red/blue states.

like

The people in the midwest are no longer the agricultural producers for the country. Agriculture produces a fraction of a % of jobs - it is automated, just like the jobs in the rest of the rust belt have been and will be. I agree that we have not been a true democracy - but the reason we have not been a true democracy has been to keep dominant class in power (White men and I am one of them) but the system has not adopted to the times when a small group of society should impose their will on the whole. We can try to follow the playbook of the Roman Empire - but it won't end up any better.

like

@m1 people in rural areas (not necessarily just the Midwest) are overwhelmingly still the producers of America. Automation loses jobs if efficiency is not taken advantage of, but the key is to create higher output with the jobs we are bringing back. We do not need to be in a pure democracy, that is calling for absolute anarchy. Why is no one protesting the House or the Senate? It's the same concept and actually that's how the number of electors are chosen. Why is no one protesting the primary process (even though Hillary won the popular vote in '08 but Obama wiped the floor with her with delegates)? Stop whining just because you didn't get your way. People who live in heavily red or blue states see how terrible it is to live in a perpetual one party system, ex. California which utilizes a primary system that ensures people are voting between democrats come November and stifles any legitimate debate. This country has never and will never be a true democracy, and if that is life-ending for you... perhaps find a country that better fits your expectations.

like

I don't disagree, but I think there has to be someway to represent those that don't live in massive cities...if you go pure popular vote you end up with candidates who only worry about problems facing the big metro areas

like

@A1 Yes they would care more about those in urban centers but isn't that democracy. Why should one vote in rural areas matter more than one vote in urban centers? Isn't that the principal of one person one vote.

like

Excellent analogy!

like

Because M1 the people in the Midwest are agricultural producers for the liberal cities. I think they're pretty important. This might not be a football game but it is about winning points per predetermined rules. Also we are not a true democracy and never have been, but the will of the people in each state were heard. Where's the outrage that the primaries do the same thing?

like

Trump is president and I certainly don't believe in retroactively changing the rules. But your analogy is flawed. The electoral college existed solely bc the founders didn't trust an unfiltered voice of the people. Rightfully so, the country decided that we didn't want a plutocracy where individuals can't directly vote for the president. If you insist on comparing the election of the most powerful person in the world to a game, then the analogy would be that just like football, rules need to be tweaked (as they were with the original electoral college system). Just because a set of rules/laws exist doesn't mean they always have to be that way. And before saying this is just a whiny liberal idea, Maryland passed a law (that only goes into effect if the majority of states enact similar legislation) that their electoral votes go to the winner of the national popular election, instead of who won the state. This was passed in 07.

like

@m1 I think you misunderstood. If the Republican Party is a consistent loser in your state -- Delaware, for example -- maybe it should be replaced by an a party not affiliated with the Republican Party. That seems like an obvious opportunity for the libertarians, since the republicans of Delaware haven't accomplished anything in 25 years, anyway. Or maybe there is another party that could unite the republicans with a fragment of the democrats. It just seems like we're arguing between miller and coors when 'craft' opportunities should be available.

like

Idt anyone is trying to change the rules. Trump himself said the electoral college a "disaster for democracy"

https://www.google.com/amp/amp.usatoday.com/story/93575326/

It's too bad we don't make better use of our non-swing states to try out new political approaches and view points. Are you in a state that's been 70/30//D/R for your whole life? Maybe affiliate with some other party...
