Today I got a bug report from our customer support team. Our system can technically bill people in increments of a fraction of a cent. When it actually bills, it'll round to the nearest cent.

Today, someone complained that they were charged $x.44, but the system determined that $x.441 worth of services were rendered. They were confused why our system didn't round up to $x.45 and insisted on a fix.

This got through a customer and 2 levels of support before it got me. It was rounded correctly.

What an honest customer. Your product owner probably provide them the wrong information.

They don't want those fractions of a penny going to someone's bank account!

I was working with one big famous insurance company and this rouding issue costed company big money as total sales was in billions. N it was esclated so much.

This is actually the plot of Superman 2

Need some advice here. Option 1: rent a condo for 2600 a month. Option 2: pay 2600 in mortgage/month, but I can only afford ~5% for the down payment. I recently started my first post-college job as a software developer and have to make a decision pretty soon: front-end development or back-end development. I really like being closer to the user and the creativity as far as front-end. But I also reallly really enjoy math and logic and the more complex side to back-end. My dream would be to do full stack but thats not an option. Scared of getting pigeon holed. Any suggestions as to what to do / tips?

I just got a job offer for an Entry Level Software Engineer at Boeing in Saint Louis. The salary is $82,000 with an $8,000 sign on bonus. I was hoping for an offer closer to 90k base and I don’t care too much for a sign on bonus. However, this is a lot more than what I’m making now, and would be my first SWE job. Should I counter? If so, how would I go about doing that? Thanks!

I'm hiring and I've just learned that my HR department is screening candidates by asking them about very specific functions and frameworks.

"Can you describe your experience using Element#remove()?"

"Can you describe your experience migrating from X framework to Y framework?"

We don't use Y framework and have no plans to use Y framework in the foreseeable future. I also don't expect candidates to have all functions memorized. How on Earth did they find out about Y framework!? 🙄🫣

My company is adopting Scrum and hiring a bunch of agile coaches to assist with sprints. We got assigned our agile coach that'll be starting soon.

I read a description of what this role is supposed to be for and it sounds like they'll be leading Scrum ceremonies. So they run the planning meeting, the retrospective and daily stand ups. Up to now, I've been doing those and it's taken a total of like 2 hours a week of my time.

What on earth do agile coaches do with the other 95% of their time?

What's the best course of action when you find yourself at a job that's far more chaotic than you assessed while interviewing? Upon starting this job a couple of weeks ago, I discovered between the time I interviewed and my start date they had hired a new CEO, laid off all of their off-shore teams, changed my position to a new hiring manager, and added an on-call rotation to all engineering teams. None of this showed up in my research of the company or my interviews.

I definitely could use the extra paycheck to help out with my financial obligations. Just wanted to see if anyone has done this before.
