Today my manager sent out recurring one-on-one meeting invitation saying: “Analyst to set the agenda” . I felt that’s a bit rude. She could’ve used my first name instead. Or am I thinking too much?

Have her refer to you as "Analyst" during the meeting. Correct her if she uses your real name. That'll get the point across.

funnylike

It’s recurring so she doesn’t want to keep changing names. Tomorrow you may not be the analyst :)

Or tomorrow I am leaving😇

In my opinion a great skill to have is to forgive and forget so there’s no longer any emotional tie to the action, and then bring up casually or in a funny way. Like once the meeting happens, “Hey I saw you put analyst to set a agenda; is that me? Do you plan on having any other analysts stopping by?” most of the time it’s greeted with a laugh and I’m sorry I’m brain fried if you can say it lightly… it’s the best way to display awareness/hold your ground.

Ironic

like

- name should have been used
- you should set the agenda. 1:1s should always be about you and your goals. It should not be a status update. It should not be the manager talking about themself the whole time. It is your time with them and it is your responsibility to drive the conversation.

like

Not thinking too much, that's definitely rude. I wish I could say I've never heard of it before, but it happens.

like

Yes, that’s a little rude. But blow it off. It’s not a biggie. It’s accepted 1:1s are supposed to be driven by the subordinate and it looks like she was setting that expectation.

like

It would be funny if your name is something like Sam/Liz/Jake… less to type than analyst

like

Just in case, I'd ask the manager what's up with that. Might be a minor office politics situation with respect to whoever else is in the meeting. Good to be aware.

like

It was a one-on-one. Just me and her. I did not bring it up. I let it fly this time.

like

There are going to be bigger problems that come up (probably). I'd choose your battles. At least she remembers what your job title is!

like

Highly likely it's a recurring meeting that has had real turnover. Whomever the analyst is, the meeting stays solid. Taking stuff like this personally is the definition of first world problems.

like

It was a one on one. Thanks for defining first world problems @prod nosing.

Totally rude, but water off a duck's back is the best approach.

Oh god. I'm assuming you have other annoyances with them. Sounds like pretty basic boss problems, but the kind that you have to grin and bear.

Aren't you an analyst? What's the problem?

Just tell her how it made you feel. You have good point - it seems really impersonal and not very human.

Having an ‘informal’ chat with a manager whose team I’m hoping to transition into. They’re aware of my work/accomplishments as I work closely with them in my current role, but I’m a bit nervous as we don’t have too much of a personal relationship. They suggested having a chat as my managers reached out to them about my interest to join their team. Any advice for the conversation?

How do you handle a CD that overrides everything to do with web/UX/UI for their own opinions and tastes? A few months ago the same CD admitted to having no new web knowledge since the mid 90's...

My team and I have provided research/data backed design choices but our CD could care less. We present our ideas in a respectful manner but it seems he interprets it as a threat to his authority. It makes for a frustrating work environment and our products aren't nearly as successful as they could be.

Hi all,

My boss makes jokes about me being from a different country whenever there is a work meeting or a gathering with coworkers, even though he knows where I am from. This usually occurs when I meet new work-related people or for example if I am in a situation that involves ethnic related subjects.

What is this? This is normal?

Stereotyping?
Racism?

The first time I ignored that, but now it has become a pattern and is bothering me now. I am south-American working in the UK.

Have you ever been told off by an older attorney of color? We have one Black partner at our firm and in conversation with him this morning he told me I should work on sounding and looking "more professional" and not let my "tone" or "bad attitude" get in the way. I don't think I've ever had a bad attitude at work, and whatever "tone" I'm speaking in it's my normal one. As a Black woman I just feel super weird about it and kind of sad.

Everyone on my team is leaving the firm. The PPMD who hired me left the firm before my start date, now two seniors have left in the last 2 months. My team will be down to <3 with no manager/SM/PPMD. The guy has worked hard; he went to top 10 schools for undergrad and grad, and has openly mentioned that the sacrifice...cont

I’m a new associate working for a well-known defense attorney in my state. On one hand, I’m thankful for the opportunity to learn from one of the best, but he also excoriates and belittles me for my mistakes. Any advice on how much it tolerable? I am here to learn and advance my career but he can be pretty nasty. The plant manager doesn’t know my skills so anytime I’m in the office working he calls me to the floor to do something the other techs can do. Should I have a talk with the boss about it?
