It’s easier and happy happy fun time to ignore reality. But reality doesn’t change based off your personal hopes and dreams. Humans have been, and will continue to be, drawn to and trust people who at least appear to have their lives together. And to make things even more unfair, just read the studies on “The Halo effect” and also the extremely easily observed effect looks have on literally everyone all over the world. No one has to like it, but it’s a long standing reality.
If you read the post, I also mentioned the objective reality of human’s biases through pretty much all of history.
Again, I didn’t say it’s good, fair or nice to think about.
The Halo effect study just shows that in numbers, but it doesn’t take a genius to observe that humans subconsciously and consciously skew towards aspirational aesthetic. Marketing is basically built on that.
The whataboutisms of people who aren’t conventionally physically aspirational doesn’t change the realities of the human mind.
For me that would have been a really harmful comment to hear. I have struggled with self worth and self esteem since a teenager, and have done a lot of work on myself to be happy and comfortable with who I am. I’m, by no means, the most “fit” person, I am a little over weight too, but I am actually happy with who I am now and I suffered through years of unhealthy restrictive eating and excessive exercise to be here. I totally understand why that comment could miss the mark for some people. I hope everyone is okay.
I totally agree that this is insensitive. I am so sorry you have struggled with this. Honestly, even as someone who is considered to be "fit" I strongly disagree with what this Director said. I can get behind encouraging
people to be healthy in terms of maybe offering healthy snacks and offering gym memberships, things like that. Again with a focus on health and wellness- NEVER EVER on appearance. Nope not OK .
Yikes. The Director sounds like an a-hole!
Not cool. And reportable.
are you sure this related to physical (weight) or was it clothing. Big difference. If you dress like a slob, whether thin or not, it is a bad appearance
I have heard this statement multiple times but in terms of sustainability. I keep being told that if i don’t take care if health, i will not have enough fuel when i move up as partner. Never heard in context of professional appearances
Unless that Director is going to pay for everyones gym memberships, personal trainers, and private chefs so that everyone is in a "shape" that he deems worthy of making the company look good, he needs to "professionally" stfu.
He should be thankful you’re even in the office.
I would feel personally attacked and be pissed as hell and looking for a new job
Do you work at A&F? 😅
Do you work at Equinox or some other fitness center company?
If it's not in the job description originally, then there should be a discussion to add that along with the new compensation package to match with the new responsibility.
This is bad communication regardless if it was fitness or clothing.
I remember when I was working at a large property management company, there was a notice given out to the entire office about people needing to dress better to look presentable. I thought it was appropriate because some of the women were wearing yoga pants and sports tops, it was not professional looking at all. Something I always noticed though were the women who were older and overweight always dressed like a million bucks. They dressed very professional and fashionable. However, later on the president clearly yelled while frustrated that he was sick and tired of the “old, fat women in the company”. I was quite young at the time but I was floored he said it out loud. I also caught myself laughing because he was old, balding, overweight and dressed like a slob. Sometimes they may mean to look professional/ presentable but it could mean something very different.
Pro
😳
First - the director is an a-hole
Second - professional appearance can happen with ANY size or shape. Director is 1000% wrong and needs to get theirselves checked.
I would quit over that and I’m not overweight.
Triggered
Yikes. Not sure if they are talking about clothes or more like fitness but either way this could’ve been communicated much more positively. For my team members, I am upfront with letting them know that I don’t care if they go on walks, workout during lunch, etc as if they don’t feel like they have time for their health then everyone loses
At ey I was told I was not presentable to the client, this senior manager (Indian) based out of Hoboken office looked like he was giving a bj whenever he spoke.. I was like 😬
“Looked like he was giving a bj whenever he spoke” uh, elaborate. Is something protruding out of his mouth? 😂
If they give us 4 paid hours a week to do it - fine!
As an employment lawyer, im just over here waiting for the discrimination lawsuits to roll in. They company better not terminate any of the individuals present in that meeting anytime soon 🤣🤣
Yes. Even though weight is not a protected class. You take a good performer and fire them for that and that jury is going to award some damages. V
