I think it’s interesting that the US hasn’t really changed but the rest of the world has. We could probably cut back a bit.
Plus we have way more PJs
Some people are still flying. I was having a FaceTime date on Saturday instead of Friday. The date told me they were going from Louisiana to San Diego because it was only $60, they couldn’t resist, and everything would be Ok because they were going from being with family to be with more family and friends. 🤷♂️
Lots of cargo still flying. Also essential/military & government chartered travel
The economics of air freight and rail are so vastly different
CARES Act mandated airlines keep scheduled services to all airports they served prior to COVID. There are a lot of tiny airports served by 1-3 of the US majors.
Overall the flying in the US is down significantly hit the scale of this map doesn't show it. 15k flights vs 3k is a big drop.
There was also a report that airlines are flying empty flights to keep the slots...not sure how true it’s is though.
Airlines are taking cargo too
When you realize you are not the most valuable cargo paying to be onboard the flight.
If airlines cancel the flight they have to fully refund the tickets but If they still fly the flight they are able to give a credit instead
Yeah they are giving refunds if they cancel on you, and airline credit if you cancel on them in my experience

Cargo and medical/essential personnel.
A lot of airlines are flying empty. There are rules about losing airport slots (use them or lose them). Also there are certain minimal levels of service are required between cities.
The important question to ask is do they manage to be on time
You rolls of toilet paper are flying.

This would have been over a lot sooner if they shut down all air travel (exceptions to cargo and essential) four weeks ago.
I’m close to a commercial pilot; he said the airlines have to keep flights going to get the government bailout money.
ATL departed 12,000 flights yesterday vs typical 26,000. So down roughly 54%.
As stated up thread a major part of the answer is that the government is forcing the airlines to maintain service to all airports they served before the pandemic hit.
Not familiar with the union contracts but my guess is that they are paying the crew minimum amount of $ already given their reduced hours so the only incremental cost that matters is fuel which is also now much cheaper.
Commercial and military ^
I just dropped my mom off at the airport...she is an MD and travels around the country for that reason.
Ha, yes! She is a doctor!
