My former student is now our local hardworking Amazon delivery driver, and I am always glad to see her. When I opened the door, she said, “Wow! You’re my teacher!” Once I asked her name, everything came flooding back from years ago. They grow up a lot in 14-15 years, and it’s nice to see them as productive adults. So many kids that I taught years ago do all kinds of things for a living-business and tech folks, teachers, doctors, engineers, lawyers, an FBI agent, accountants, restaurant and retail managers—the list goes on and on. When you get frustrated that someone is not turning work in on time or not reaching their potential, just realize that everyone is on his/her own path. Many will find their way in life by their mid to late 20’s. We just have to hold them accountable for our small part.
This is a topic I've seen discussed lately and I don't understand why. If you see a past, present or future student, why would you ignore them? What good does that do? I stop by school once or twice a week and there are a couple of students who are working maintenance at the school. I greet them, I say hi, I tell them good job with what they are doing. My wife who is a para at the same school is a part-time cashier at the supermarket ... she works with students she and I both have in class.
I hope this is a tongue-and-cheek question because if it isn't, I worry about a lot of educators.
I saw two students the other one at the grocery store and one at the beach. I talked to both of them to see how they are doing and enjoying their summer. Amazing that parents don’t want to meet the teacher they just kept going. One of the students approached me at the beach 🙄 a little embarrassing but she is a sweet girl so I didn’t mind… I don’t have to worry about about showing up on some site in my bathing suit!

I was at the mall picking up underwear at a sale at Macys when I saw a family from my school on my way out. They were there with their middle school son shopping for graduation attire. They asked what I found and I told them my favorite underwear on sale. The mom said something related to how important high quality undergarments are. We had a huge laugh. This was a family I knew well. At the end of the year they sent me a beautiful card with a Macys gift card.

I got so excited this week when a former student from 1979-80 contacted me on Facebook!
Depends on the student!!!
😂🤣😂
My policy in public is that if you acknowledge me I will respond. Last thing I want to do is end up in a surprise conversation with their parents.
I saw 2 at the beach… put on my sun glasses and kept reading. I don’t want to be seen at the beach. I left shortly after🙄

B- might not embrace (depends on student) but will definitely express joy.
Already have run into 2 of them. I didn’t embrace, but expressed how happy I was to see them.

B it’s great to see a familiar face, esp a student we’ve taught for a whole school year!
For sureB. I just had lunch with a student I had 6 years ago. (Just retired from 6th grade) we had lunch and just talked for 4 hours!
