Serious reply: I’m an intern in tech consulting (System Engineering) at Deloitte. Managing a 12 person team offshore and mentoring/managing a couple of other interns onshore. I’m still learning a lot of the management/consulting aspects of the role, but I’m very technical and resolve technical issues for the offshore team, contribute to the solution, approach, architecture, merge code to GitHub, work with the branch owners (My team is working on 6 repos) to pass the gating process and get our code pushes merged, etc. Funnily enough I had a similar convo with someone junior in M&A last year and they were super dismissive of the work I’ve done. So I just asked my SM and Partner to make intros to senior folks in M&A.

Man. Deloitte is a dumpster fire.

They might come off a bit naive but I’d suggest you cut them a bit of slack here. They’re an intern, and they have yet to learn the ropes. I doubt they meant to offend you or come off as smug, they just don’t realize how they are coming off. You have a lot of power in this situation and how you use it will say a lot about your character. Take the opportunity to build trust with them, be kind, and gain yourself an ally for the future. Like my grandma always says: “it’s nice to be nice”.

Just be like: I’ll chat with you’re current manager. If you’re really leading a 10 person work stream, I’ll think about switching you over. If you’re lying to me though, I’ll talk to HR about your continued employment here. Before I chat with your manager, do you want to revise your story?

Tell him that if he’s going to boldface lie, he needs to up his lie game.

If someone tried that on me, I’d rip them apart one resume bullet at a time.

But people around me discourage that growth potential and earnings in industry are way less compared to public accounting. I know that too but I still want to leave. I liked my finance courses in undergrad, but not sure how relevant that is. Would I have ANY transferable skills from my accounting background? Can you explain what the work is like for a new hire? Especially if you've made a similar switch?
