Told my partner that I am experiencing severe covid symptoms and that am running around trying to get a test (very difficult where I am located right now). His response was to call him later today when I am *finally* at my desk to discuss a matter which requires work over the weekend. Is this normal?

Covid or not, tell him you’ll be at your desk when you feel up to it and you’ll let him know when that is, but it won’t be before Monday.

like

This is the correct response.

Get the test. Feel better. Hopefully he just wants to have you hand off the details on the case so that he doesn’t have to bother you. If not, it’s harsh and a sign that the firm has a tough it out attitude for legitimate sickness. Not good.

like

I’d bow out and let him know that you’re really sick. If he makes you do the work, consider better options. We all have to work when we have colds and take care of our children and be adults, but COVID, flu, and other serious sick symptoms warrant a pause.

like

Only if you don’t test positive. If you test positive tell him you have it and feel unwell and are unable to work until your condition improves.

Tell him to pound sand. You're sick until Monday or Tuesday.

Thanks everyone. I was not sure if I was being unreasonable. Will keep him posted and log off. Take care and have a good (hopefully long) weekend.

In my experience, no one will go out of their way to accommodate whatever you're dealing with. But at the same time, if you act as though you're entitled to some boundaries, the people who value you will respect those boundaries.

like

Do not. Whether or not it’s Covid is frankly irrelevant. You’re severely sick. You do not need to be taking on new matters over a holiday weekend. Tell him you are severely sick and need to rest. Not resting is just going to prolong symptoms and mean more time away from work. He can find someone else to do it or do it himself. If he’s desperate for staff which it sounds like he is, you’re not getting laid off for being severely ill and unable to work during a Covid spike and labor shortage/Great Resignation.
