If you are not in a bind to find work then I would just say it like that. That’s the beauty of job searching when you already have a job.

Lesson learned: always start from the highest number.

^ u def don’t want to over shoot it. On the hiring side, I’ve certainly seen that hurt ppl. Know what the position is worth and shoot for that, maybe 5-10k over. But I’ve seen some ppl ask 40k over in the screen with HR and it didn’t even make me want to interview them.

like

This is why I do not like giving a number . I prefer to say that I will consider the total package, benefits etc and then I say how I once priced myself out of a job (benefits were amazing) and underpriced myself (no real benefits) while naming the same number. I try to transition to, if the firm is interested in hiring the cheapest person then they should just move on.

If 10k is making a difference it’s probly not the right long term move no?

Leverage comes when u have the offer. Mention ur interviewing around and the salary bands are a bit higher. Politely ask if they can match.

I don’t think you should be taking a job just for the money, money should help, but if it’s 20-50k ish difference, better just wait to find a role you actually like

$20k-$50k is a huge difference when we don’t make Director money...

I didn’t make director money until recently anyways. Trust that the right role will come along... it’ll be worth the wait :)

Everybody on here makes so much money

I am due to take 2 weeks parental leave sometime in the next month and have an offer lined up. Is it better to tell the new place I would prefer to push my start date to take my leave and join two weeks after (accounting for 2 weeks of notice when I get back)? Would that be burning a bridge with current firm (taking leave and giving notice as soon as I am back)? I want to avoid losing 2 weeks of salary during that time if I can.

Should I pay 1.5X rent to get out here and get a nice place?
