Tomorrow is my first day of a new job, I am crazy sick. How bad would it be to take a sick day?

You probably will be in HR trainings the whole day. Can you just dial it in?

like

In person or remote? If remote I say at least try to do some meet and greet. If in person, definitely don’t go in and try to do some remote meet and greet.

You'll likely be on boring calls the whole day. The most you may have to do is just say "hi I'm X", wouldn't worry too much about it

like

Like how sick? A really bad cold? Covid? Stomach virus? If you're really sick and honestly can't get through the day, send a high importance email now and follow up via phone in the AM. If you're sick, you're sick. But give the amount of prep work that has gone into preparing for your start day, it really isn't a good first impression to miss. Most likely they cannot easily reschedule Day 1 orientation (this is usually only done on Monday) and your team has probably prepped some things for you for the rest of the week. This is an awful situation and I'm sorry you have to deal with this. I think the best thing, if you're able, is to alert HR of the situation and dial into what you can. Usually you have a lot of free time the first week, so you might only need to be on for 3-4 hrs Day 1 if you can.

A1 please do not discount the amount of work that goes into preparing this. Getting laptops set up, scheduling meetings, alerting staffing, updating presentation materials. When a company does not put in the prep it absolutely shows. People somehow don't have their laptop Day 1 or their log in isn't working, or HR isn't responding to emails from the employees personal account. Others are missing the link to the onboarding session, or it doesn't work. Participants catch dated information on slides. HR didn't staff or plan the call appropriately to answer live questions. HR didn't alert you that you needed to do I-9 verification in person within 3 days of employment. You have nothing to do your first week because your team didn't prepare any department/project/onboarding. Or you have too much work because your team didn't give you time to complete things like mandatory cimplaince training, profile set ups, troubleshoot things with IT, etc. A heck of a lot of work goes into prep.

As others have said, it’s unlikely you’ll even be talking to other humans, it’s probably introduction videos and click through training. Just do it from bed.

To everyone who is saying to work even if you’re sick: this mentality is why we are still in a pandemic. If you’re sick, take the day off. Rest. Get better. And then go back to work. If your employer can’t handle you taking a sick day, find a new employer.

like

Exactly PwC1! 95% of us are just cogs in the corporate machine. If things were run in the best interest of the employee, a heck of a lot things would be different.

Totally fine, take off!

I feel like in a time where it’s WFH (for the most part) sick days are not a thing

Also these “welcome to X” things are usually scheduled with a cohort so it’s hard to reschedule them. Would be best to just suck it up and join the calls tbh. Like others have said you won’t have to do much on them

We’re still dealing with a global pandemic. Say you were potentially exposed to someone who tested positive for Covid and you feel super ill, and you’ll get tested ASAP but need to take the day off. Get tested for Covid because that’s actually a posibility. If it’s negative you can say it was strep instead or something, if it’s positive then you’re covered. Accenture takes covid extremely seriously and your manager is not going to think poorly of you for prioritizing your health and public health.

In the office today, NY biglaw factory. Somewhere, echoing down the halls of my floor, is someone hacking away with a terrible cough for the last hour. Sigh….almost two years of a pandemic and we apparently still haven’t learned the simplest lesson to stay home when sick….this is why biglaw can’t have nice things!

My firm was one of the firms that gave covid bonuses but did not specify whether everyone was getting it. I didn’t make my hours this year because I was on maternity leave and a bunch of my cases ended 1-2 months before I went out so I had lower hours before I started my leave. I couldn’t make up for those lost hours when I was back since I was working from home with an infant because of covid. I didn’t get the covid bonus, which in my mind is ironic considering the circumstances. (Cont.)
