Took PTO today so I can catch up on work. So I can actually do real work instead of sitting in useless client meetings for 10 hrs every day then having to pull a night shift to do the work 🤷🏻‍♀️

Why is evryone screaming about PTO that you sometimes won't use all or be able to carry over because after a year... You all sound like 8 hours of 'free' work is not less than the few days you are on the bench or work is slow in a year. Do you all realise that 'losing' 8 hours to Deloitte might be a worthwhile avenue for this fella to gain back their sanity from constant feeling of needing to catch up. Not the most ideal but let someone do what works best on an opportunity cost basis.

On my projects we look at client meetings a week ahead and divide and conquer with meeting attendance. Any time clients have questioned why we don’t have everyone who was invited attend a meeting we are honest in saying we think the client gets more out of productive billable hours (doing work) than they would if 10 consultants attended a meeting where only 2-3 are playing an active role. Has the added benefit of earning some client trust as well. When consultants outnumber clients in every meeting, something is off. Doesn’t work on every engagement, but just a thought.

There’s something very wrong with this post

likefunnyhelpful

You’re basically paying Deloitte a few hundred dollars to work. That’s extremely stupid OP.

The sad thing is when I read this my first thought was “oh, I could use a day like that” 🤦🏻‍♀️

Wow, everyone so black and white here. You know there’s a difference between saying you’re on PTO and actually using PTO. Plenty of people have put a day of PTO on their calendar, actually work the day, and then hit the appropriate charge codes, not the PTO code. It’s not a bad way when you need an occasional day.

Sometimes I set up a meeting with people in the same boat and we just use the time to catch up on work. I find people are less likely to book over meetings that include other people than holds for myself. Moderately helpful but I still end up with all meeting days and weekend work

Do not do this!

Set boundaries and learn to say no! It’s all about being focused and efficient and you can’t get results without either. So, tell your boss or anyone who you need to notify, how you can achieve same or better results more efficiently. Good luck

I totally understand and relate, but I hope you won’t have to do that in the future. Block out some time on your calendar (set up a Skype meeting to yourself) so you can do work and get paid for it. :(

I mean I use pretty much all of my PTO every year, can’t imagine using one of those days to do work 🤷🏼‍♀️

To those saying not to do this, how is working on PTO different than working nights and weekends? Also, maybe policies vary, but if I work while on vacation I deduct those hours from the vacation hours for the day. So if I were to do this, I would put PTO in my calendar, set OOO, work 8 hours, bill 8 hours and use 0 vacation hours

Yeah D1. Not everyone has no life and won’t take their PTO 🙄

Cancel all meetings, put up it if office, do work and charge time to client. Don't understand why you have to actually take PTO.

This reads as seeking for a pity party. If you were that time constrained get off fishbowl. Set boundaries, say no and be upfront with priorities and timelines....

I use my sick days for this. The way I justify this is “I need a mental health day. If I’m on calls all day long, I might finally lose it and yell at someone”.. I really don’t mind the work and as P1 suggested, I charge time appropriately.

like

D1, OP obviously made this post because they know it’s not normal / okay so idk what other reaction they wanted besides everyone being like “what! Don’t do that!"

Time blocking your calendar two weeks in advance will save you wasting your PTO like this !

Psh, this is what weekends are for. Kidding! But I completely relate. Manager level, meetings are killing me. Actually executing any work means nights or weekends.
