Any tips for a partner track associate trying to balance an older partner who has a "my way or the highway" personality and support staff who are human and don't do well with partner's personality? In less than two years we have been through 3 legal secretaries and feel like our current one is one month in and already over it. I love my firm but worry we are getting a bad reputation by burning through support staff. Anyone had success in dealing with this?

I found out by accident that some of my coworkers in my department received equity offers as part of their comp packages, but myself and others didn’t. I think this is unfair. There’s no obvious rhyme or reason to why - YOE, job title, effectiveness vary between those that did get it and those that didn’t. Should I bring this up to my boss? How would you handle this situation?

Anyone work at a midsize to big law firm in an office with no other Black people? If you do, how did you end up connecting well with your partners and colleagues?

My boss in my creative agency threatened to fire me because I, a male, came into work with my nails painted. HR is having a very complicated day today as I found out I could take legal action if he does fire me since we don't have an established dress code that has any guidelines against male nail polish wearing.

Mostly to vent, but wonder if anyone else has had to deal with this…my team consists of a partner, shareholder, 3 associates, myself and a legal assistant. We have a busy docket, 70 active litigation files. For over a year I have been dealing with inexperienced legal assistants, mostly coming from other areas of law. The partner relies heavily on me to clean up the messes, fix the mistakes, etc., and HR is on me for doing too much admin, i.e., non-billable work.

Just got rejected by an opportunity that I was really excited for / aligned perfectly with my interests and skillset. Pretty bummed by it :( How do you all self-motivate after these kind of rejections?

I have this partner who doesn’t enjoy working with me because I do below avg work for her but she has little choice of foot soldiers. I do below avg work for her because she consistently gives me little time to do huge tasks (and usually at odd hours) and doesn’t involve me in what finally goes to the client (and I have no visibility on the client’s expectations, response, feedback, expected timeline). How do we (mainly I) get out of this painful cycle?

My Legal department reports to HR. We used to report to the CEO. What’s the knee-jerk reaction to directly reporting to HR?

I've been seeing a lot of ADCOLOR posts on linkedin, and some of the people who are liking and reposting it are some of the same people who were blatantly racist and rude to me when I worked with them. I have a direct report who rambles on and on about non work related things during meetings and in general. Even when it’s work related, it’s rambling with no direction or purpose. How to address?

My manager had been saying some REALLY over the line stuff in standup meetings. They spoke to him and he stopped being a weirdo but the company never addressed it further with us. Is that normal? My company cut staff to 4 days/wk to save funds. I was getting requests from coworkers for docs needed urgently on our day off (fridays). I would oblige them. But then, I learned that those same coworkers had been put back to 5 days because they were deemed “essential“. I felt foolish and decided to stop working on fridays. One EVP (not the GC) in particular has been aggressively texting/calling me on fridays. How Do I tactfully respond? My out-of-office email is not enough of a hint...

Just got out of a meeting with a client. Talk about uncomfortable- they'd fired their director that morning and he ran in screaming at the team. They ended up calling security to kick him out!

How do you handle micro managers? I’m a second year transactional associate and for the most part the partners and senior associates I work for trust me to get the work done. But this one guy is constantly checking up on me, asking for status of deliverables long before the deadlines he gave me, and just generally pestering me on everything I do. I am going to go insane if don’t figure out a way to stop this.

My company is rolling out wage increases. I noticed that there are only three of the 11 new hires from 2011 that are not getting the increase until their anniversary date. I questioned this because there is no rhyme or reason for three of them to be left out. The others did not negotiate increases at hiring so why leave them out?

My professional life at the moment is far from ideal. I’ve been on quarantine (long story, but a good one) for the last seven years. Royalties from my books don’t pay the bills. Did anyone who got Moderna vaccine get a flare up of seborrheic dermatitis?

I got my first flare up of this autoimmune condition 5 days after my first Moderna dose and it’s only gotten worse since (I have been doing treatment). I was doing some research online how covid patients in hospitals got the condition so I wasn’t sure if it would be related to the 2 doses of Moderna vaccine.
