You need to get through the ATS, so no cute formats or tables. Straight words only. No symbols with the exception of a small bullet. If you use a slash, you need a space on either side of it. Looks shitty but ATS gets confused if there are no spaces around a slash. Change the title of your resume each time to match each job description and change other verbiage to match as well. Look at job descriptions for the positions you are interested in and pick out the key words that are used the most. There are websites that do this for you. These words need to be included on your resume (hopefully as part of an accomplishment statement.). Hope this helps.

If it doesn't pertain to the job you're applying to, don't include it. You can tailor each resume to the job. Also, don't put an extremely long professional statement (if you put one at all).

Living in Van. Previously lived in Toronto. Obviously rent prices are high as is cost of living. Generally go out and spend more often living in a city. Boyfriend and I on good salary but not saving much due to the above. Before we move home to our own country, we’d love to spend a year close to Vancouver where rent is cheaper, temptation is less, to save. A commute to Vancouver 1-2 times a month needs to be possible (his job). That can be a flight if it’s not crazy. Thoughts? Recommendations?

Recently I got invited to an interview with a decent growing company. I work in Executive Search and I am thinking of switching to in-house recruiting. During the conversation the recruiter made some weird assumptions about my current job. The interview took longer than expected and I feel like I have not delivered well. Was I wrong to expect in-house recruiter to understand the differences and similarities between in-house-recruiting, professional search and retained executive search?

I'm an older non-traditional engineer. My current job was an over the phone interview. I was raised with a suit in mind for interviews. What should I wear? Jeans and a polo? Khakis and a button down? I read that anything beyond dockers and a button down is a negative. Thoughts?

So I’m about to start my interview process for Capital One next week for a Senior Financial Analyst position. My recruiter going give me a prep call on Friday but I wanted any advice that recruiters don’t tell you during the interview process. Also I wanted to ask if Capital One a decent place to work at. I will be working at the one in McLean Virginia if that helps.

Suppose you are 3 months pregnant and interviewing for a job. Would you disclose to the recruiter that you are expecting or is there no need to give that information until after being hired? As for the compensation, if you’ve already been told pre-interview, the salary range for the role, is it appropriate to negotiate a number for the salary if you are asked your desired salary in the first screening interview? Or should you try to hold off on the negotiation after you receive an offer?

I recently had an interview with the hiring manager and they did 95% of the talking. It was the weirdest interview I’ve ever had. I didn’t know whether to interrupt and get a question and some comments in or stay quiet and listen. I couldn’t even gauge how it went. Has this happened to you.?
Also on average how many jobs do people typically interview for before they get an offer?

How do you strategically answer the question “what is your expected pay range?” when the pay range listed is $20-$40/hr (salaried) and you want to negotiate towards $45/hr? I feel like I shocked my interviewers when I told them my expectations. I haven’t really experienced this feeling but I understand the shock since I’ve been on the other side. I feel like I should know the answer, but somehow it feels much different.

I am interviewing for a new IT Manager position. I started putting out soft feelers and then hit the hunt harder. The problem: I have one offer and need to give an answer by next Wednesday. I have two other opportunities that are in final steps but probably won’t have offers by next Wednesday. Both of the other offers will be higher pay but clearly are uncertain for offers. Do I accept the offer I have, which is a good one or wait for the other two to finalize and possibly miss out altogether?

How do you evaluate the financial health/viability of a startup you’re interviewing with? Are there specific questions you ask and/or external research you do? A company I’m interviewing with offers equity, and they say they anticipate going IPO or being bought out by a larger company in the industry. I know any company will put its best foot forward during interviews, so I’m trying to figure out to accurately evaluate those statements.
