For example, I easily spend 30+ minutes on an e-mail that the manager can do in 5... anyone else struggle with this?
Ugh! Me!
It takes time and mistakes to get to do that work more quickly and efficiently. Just keep taking on that type of work and you’ll start to build your own shortcuts and tricks to become proficient.
I’m years in and still run into this issue at times. I’ve attributed it to being too unstructured in how to get to my output/final product- I now try to map my way to how something will be done so to ensure efficiency. I also try to save time by doing the following: saving well written emails for templates vs. spending 30mn phrasing a response to a partner, recycling all deck slides- no sense in doing it all over again, though this requires you put down your storyboard on paper first otherwise you’ll tinker on non value adds for hours. It’s tough but it gets easier over time, and so does your prioritization on where to invest your extra hours/efforts.
It’s about breaking up the work into manageable chunks- I suffer from “perfectionism” and can spend hours f’ing around on one slide. If you have the concept in mind (the hard part) the rest is the logistics of performing your tasks to 80% vs 100% so you can proceed to the next step and not waste time on non-critical items.- you’ll find that the efficiency you gain will actually give you back the time you need to revisit your work and do final quality interactions. There’s info about the 80/20 efficiency rule if you want to google it. I promise it gets easier as you go.
Going through this currently. Two years in. Following.
Same here following...
You’ll get better with reps but a lot of this should be structured problem solving.
I’ll give Deloitte credit where its due, they ran MINTO down my throat and it served me well as a foundational skill.
You’ll get there. This is one reason why billing rates are higher for higher (more experienced) levels. They are pulling from various experiences where you are figuring it out. Just keep at it
What was the work?

What level are you? What level is your coworker? This takes a few years of experience until you've seen enough and built enough skill set that you can do it in your sleep.
We’re both post mba consultants 😔 I wouldn’t be so worried if the coworkers are more senior
