3rd or 4th, with a big shift toward running negotiations during year 4.

I think it depends on what you mean. Just literally negotiating and drafting, first year.

2nd, but I was in venture and was a paralegal for many years pre- law school.

I do heavy drafting right now as a first year, but I clerked under a named partner for a year before I graduated. As far as negotiations go, I’m allowed to sit in the room during conference calls, but I don’t speak other than to introduce myself.

I’m 9 months in and am drafting various agreements and governance documents with much less oversight now. Like the above, I’m not engaged in negotiations during calls but am expected to prepare written responses to comments and revisions by opposing counsel.

I’m a junior and stuck in a situation where my senior has said that I ask too many questions and should just know what I need to do (so I’ve stopped asking questions) but also when I try to be proactive and get something wrong, get a very long talking to about my mistakes. I feel anxious and scared to do anything at this point. How do I navigate this?!?

Does anyone else have motivation problems for those odd bits of time between meetings? For example: this morning I had a call at 10, ended at 10:30 and did a quick memo. Have another call at 11 but cannot seem to bring myself to do anything in the interim. This is a recurring issue and it’s really (negatively) impacting my billing. Does anyone have any advice or solutions???

I have been reading posts from newer associates about bad things partners have done or said to them and I think it could be fun for some of us more senior lawyers in the bowl to tell stories of mean things partners did or said to us when we were new associates. Hopefully it stays mostly light and not horrible things.

Not a lawyer specific question, but since many of us have crazy student loan debt thought I’d ask here. Why on earth isn’t there a conversation around the predatory interest rates on student loans? I feel like it would be so easy for the federal government to slash those rates, then people would actually pay back their loans, and it would be so much better for so many. We are instead having exclusively conversations about loan forgiveness but why no love for reduction in interest?

Just started as a first year at an ID firm in soflo. Had no idea what I was getting myself into or that 2400 hours was out of the ordinary. I expected to get grinded and paid “low” but now I’m scared that I won’t be able to get out of ID based off what I’ve been reading and make real money like I had hoped. Any advice on getting out/when if it’s too soon?
