Transactional lawyers - I’m working on what will essentially be a script for automating common phrases, sentences, and paragraphs I end up typing out dozens of times a day (e.g. “Attached please find and updated closing checklist for the above-referenced transaction. Items we need on your end are highlighted in the attached. Please send any of the highlighted items as the become available”). What are some things you end up saying dozens of times a day in your practice?

“Sorry, specialists, but we just got this [agreement] and with apologies for the weekend work and even though the other side had it for two weeks, the client would like to see an issues list by midday tomorrow and a markup to follow (after you get zero feedback on the issues list, of course). Please feel free to connect directly with your counterparts to resolve open issues over the weekend. Thanks.”

It’s in contrast to “jackassedly following up” or “annoyedly following up” or “exasperatedly and angrily following up” which is often actually the emotion implied by communications like these.

FYI to the class, I think you can set up extra “signatures” in outlook and throw in these types of lines. One of my secretaries apparently did it all the time. There may be other ways to do it in outlook too.

Team, important update - there is a better way to do this, using QuickParts in outlook. Just type out your often repeated text in a new email, select it, click on QuickParts and “save selection to QuickPart gallery” and the next time it’s an easy insert from the QuickParts function. (The signature way wipes out your usual signature.)

Just curious, what are you using to automate your script? Is this mainly a browser extension or something else?

I have a ton of spellcheck items that do this, but for shorter phrases. Have been told numerous or larger ones lead to memory issues with Word and start creating odd behavior.

Are you doing it in ActiveWords?

It’s actually an autocorrect thing with the dictionary. For example, if you have a standard body of an email for sending a draft documents, you can set something like “draftdocsemail” to autocorrect to the language you want.

So, what would you guys say are the Pros and Cons of being a Project Manager. Asking for a friend.

This may be dumb, but how do you negotiate PTO in a new offer? Are companies usually accepting and flexible about it? My last 2 jobs had unlimited PTO and the one before that had a few more days than what is being currently offered.

I finished the recruiter, and hiring manager interviews, both went very well. The hiring manager wants to fly me to their location to “show me the site” but I haven’t heard back for almost a week.
When I let the recruiter know I had other opportunities and needed an update, they said they were finalizing getting the panel together, so it sounds like a group interview.
This is for a senior role at a rapidly growing startup, do I just need to chill?

Is there anyone in HR that can clarify this for me a little- Hawaii is a state that prohibits future employers from asking your salary. How does this apply to remote positions? Is it only based on the home state of the company? Or would it apply because I am applying from Hawaii?

Additional Posts in Law

Sometimes I question my decision to come to America. I attended a university in my home country ranked well above most ivy leagues - yet American lawyers give no respect to foreign qualifications and I have to prove myself on an individual basis time and time again. To make matters worse, US legal qualifications and experience aren’t highly regarded back home - as people there consider US legal education and practice to be politicized and unscholarly.

A founding partner who comes in once a week usually likes when we check in with him and just chat for a couple of minutes. During my conversation with the partner he asked me about what I think about X political figure (on topic because it was during the midterm chaos). I took as harmless but curious on peoples thoughts on partners asking about their associates political beliefs.

I’ve seen a lot of posts on twitter that have a ton of rts blaming the police for criminalizing homelessness and drug addiction instead of fixing the problem...so basically the police are now the scapegoats for elected officials and prosecutors? Police brutality is on police, but blaming the police for the penal code and how much it’s enforced seems like a bs way for politicians and attorneys/judges to ignore their role and blame police for following their orders. We gotta own up to our part.

My firm has a collections budget (80% of your billable rate x 1850 hours) and an hourly budget that must be met in order to be eligible for a bonus. The firm cares very little about originations and will reward someone for making their collections over someone who brings in new work. I missed my collection budget due to some odd timing with a client, but originated more than all my peers so no bonus for me. I’ve been at this same mid level firm for 9 years and it’s all I know. Is this normal??
