Transferred into international tax from compliance and felt overwhelmed by everything. People who transferred into specialty tax groups, at which point did you feel like you finally got it?

I’ve been in international tax since I interned. Still don’t feel like I “got it”. You picked a good year to transfer. Pretty much everything will be new to everyone. Take the additional time to read up on new tax reform and new 2018 tax forms

I switched from compliance to its and the 1st 6 months were awful. But after that things got better since I know more. Key thing is knowing tax law well

I’m in TT and it’s been a few years and I’m still adjusting. I definitely know way more than before, but there is just too much to learn. I’ve become comfortable with the fact that I probably won’t be the smartest one in the room again for a long time. That said, each day and each engagement (and I normally have a minimum of like 10 at a time) is completely different and I’m never bored. I also feel like I’m challenged and growing. You just have to adjust your expectations for yourself. You’re in a group of high achievers now. And these are high achievers in a larger firm of high achievers. Be humble and continue to learn. You’ll get more comfortable but you will not feel like you have a complete grasp of everything ever.

Thanks for your sharing ey2! It’s encouraging. Btw, do you mind explain what TT stands for? Transfer pricing tax?

At PWC, FS ITS drives huge revenues and compete with the law firms on structuring. I don't see that happening at EY.

Compliance sucks. Be grateful.

Hi can you share how to transferred form Compliance to ITS? What steps you took, what skills you displayed? I aspire to move to ITS. I am a CPA and will start MST soon. As a lot of ITS openings require MST OR JD

I just switched and feeling the same way. Hoping that things get better in 6 months. Since I transferred as the senior it is particularly hard because even the new hires know more than me. I’ve also had a hard time even being booked on anything which also hurts the learning part

Dying to transfer but stuck

I recently transferred as a senior. I’m feeling underwhelmed, I am billing maybe 2 hours a day and the work is not too difficult so far. It’s definitely different type of work which I am finding interesting.

Really? I honestly thought that ITS was the easiest of all tax groups... In FSO it is the easiest for sure.

EY FSO ITS group is garbage

@sm1 care to elaborate?

2 years

Would definitely recommend EY ITS as opposed to PWC

EY 4, why is that? I would think that would depend on the market

I switched into ITS as a manager 1 knowing full well that it would delay promotions. However, I also knew it would challenge me and provide huge growth opportunities. It takes a while to feel fully integrated and there are still days that I feel like I don’t know what I’m doing. Keep reaching out to people in your group for work. Do all of the ITS tax reform WBLs and other ITS and TT WBLs. There’s no silver bullet, but I still love what I do (most of the time ;) )

Any advice on joining M&A tax groups? Current experience is (mainly Fed) compliance related. Do big 4 take outside hires or should I get my foot in the door first and transfer depts?

Is it me or does the newer generation value more intangible things that aren’t easily measured like work-life balance, fulfillment and purpose in work. Which makes it difficult for firms because that’s not something that is easily measured. Also, this is why there is “value” in crypto, NFTs and the metaverse. It’s a clash of the generations that value tangible things like money, houses, cars and one that values time, experiences, personal online image. Thoughts?
