Salary is comparable
Both senior analyst and entry level consultant (think MBA equivalent status due to my MS already). Both have significant growth potentials per hiring managers. Just really asking for opinion where money ain’t the end all be all.
2. Yes the US Army is allowed. It is a profession as any career on this app. Super fortunate opportunity to be able to do wisdom of the crowd in order to help with proper decision making.
3. Thank you for the input
If I could go back 30 years to when I transitioned out and into consulting, I wouldn't do it. Stay in, go for retirement, and then transition to something else.
So I'm gonna go against the crowd here and say consultanting unless you really know what you want to do. It is a fantastic way to sharpen your skills and learn about different industries and groups. Travel is rough so if you have a family consider this. Either way, nice job on the transition, both are fantastic opps, this is not common.
If its one of the FAANG companies, then I would say go for it. Would be a fantastic resume builder and would give you a certified credibility. If you wanna move to consulting in the future or to any other companies, having FAANG in your resume would do world of good. So FAANG anyday.
Lol - slalom is a top firm?
I’d suggest thinking a lot about what kind of lifestyle you want. Both would have very different work/life balances, travel requirements, etc. Good luck OP. Honestly, don’t think you can go wrong from a career perspective. Just a matter of where you would be happier
I left the army about a year ago and have been at EY since in FSO Advisory. I hate it. My recommendation would be to fully understand the type of work you will be doing and don’t settle for the high level description/ types of projects that some may share with you when trying to understand what u will really be doing. Make sure you are clear on the more common less sexy projects that you will spend most of your time on. If I could do it over I would not have joined, currently looking for other jobs, side note the senior level is someone who is 2-3 years out of college potentially. Large salary band, but junior role
Are you saying you’re transitioning out and have opportunities at either a consulting firm or a tech company? Or are you seeking advice from people who’ve transitioned out and chose one over the other?
You should start by comparing the offers. People don’t know if you’re offered a great role on either side. Not all jobs are created equal.
Wow Us army is allowed on this?! Wish FB was around when I ETS lol
I would go FAANG too
OP IMO its impossible to really understand the work until you get there.
If you think about the next job (the one after this opportunity), the FAANG route will likely open more doors than T2 consulting. It wouldn’t be hard to go from those tech companies to a Deloitte-level firm later. Also the work life balance at most tech companies is better than consulting. Feel free to drop a burner. I spent ten years in the Army and appreciate how hard the transition decision is
Fmr army here (Ets 2014) with Deloitte (GPS/federal practice) for 6 months, wish I had done it sooner. Mentors abound here, vet and civilian, no other company or consulting firm invests in you like Deloitte in your first year ( I’d argue beyond that but I’ll need to wait and see) Project work: perform well and network and you can bounce to the work you want to do or get a taste for. It’s encouraged and expected. Great place to transition, industry’s only going to pay you more in 2 years with Deloitte on your resume. The flip on that is probably true too but good consultants make great industry leaders, vice versa, not so much.
Thanks for the advice on next job methodology of thinking.
Also, congratulations on transitioning to a successful career and I am considering Deloitte heavily. I attended their Core Program in Texas and was blown away by the organization. They invest in their people. Thanks for your opinion!
I would advise against Consulting if FAANG is option, given work life balance is likely far better at top tech firm and for similar pay
So tech may have a lot better quality of life. I transitioned as a junior AF officer to consulting and am very happy after 5 years. Great travel opportunities and pay. It is perfect for me but I do not have a family. Either way, transitioning from the military was the biggest change in my life. I wish you the best of luck!!
Transitioning out and have offers to either of those industries and looking for advice on what others think or have done
Thank you both for your recommendations. It is greatly appreciated
Thanks for the breakdown for work life balance and the lifestyle insight.
Thank you for the breakdown of your career choice. I will definitely take a bigger in depth look into what each role actually means and entails. I am currently doing an internship with the consulting firm and have a good grasp on what I am doing. Definitely will do a deep dive in the tech company. Thank you!
