Traveling abroad. Amex personal card will charge me a 2.7% fee on foreign expenses. Am I missing some add-on fees? This is way better than doing a USD/EUR currency exchange

Capital One Quicksilver is a seriously underrated card. No annual fee, no foreign transaction fees, and a flat 1.5% cash back on all purchases. Plus it's a visa / MasterCard so you don't have to worry about it not being accepted everywhere like you do with Amex and Discover

like

Call Amex. My SPG Amex stopped charging foreign transaction fees a few years ago

If you want to withdraw foreign currency without being hit by fees you can also get a Charles Schwab account. I had a client in Europe and charles scheab card saved me so much trouble and money

like

Many places in Europe don't take AMEX or Discover, so always good to have a Visa/MasterCard backup like UMP or CSR.

like

Ignore the straight cash exchanges at all cost. You get ripped of at least $50 for every few hundred converted

like

*2.7% fee after conversion to USD

Yes. Credit cards are the best. Following that ATM withdrawal. A lot of cards have no exchange fee. May be worth opening one if your credit profile allows.

Amex plat doesn't charge foreign tranx fees.

Amex gold (both versions) doesn't charge forex fee

Chase sapphire reserve no interest

Discover doesn't either

Thanks guys. This is all helpful

Also, if you take money out of an ATM, use a bank. They are more secure and usually have better exchange rates than third parties.

Looking for advice/validation. Currently have about 10 credit cards (yes really!) About half are airline cards that I signed up for for the miles, quicker boarding, and free bags- but they carry a $100 annual fee. Other half are random no-fee cards (BoA, Amazon chase, capital one venture, west elm). My thought is to cancel the ones w an annual fee (just bought a house so no immediate need for higher credit limit). Does this make sense?

As an immigrant it’s so difficult to find work that you actually love. Growing up my parents taught me to value money and not my work. This country does the same. I’ve been meaning to find work in legal field so I can work as a paralegal. But it’s so difficult to find a firm who would sponsor my visa too. It’s been a struggle lately to survive. For those that are observing yom kippur, have an easy and meaningful fast. For those with Jewish people on your teams, don’t wish them a “happy Yom Kippur” or ask them to “enjoy the time”- it’s a solemn holiday. It’s also not the responsibility of the Jewish person on the team to teach you about the holiday - you have Google. And it’s really terrible to guilt them for signing off early/taking PTO to observe.
