Traveling from Seattle-NY-Dubai-India soon. I want to take alcohol for my father but I don't drink. Which Scotch/whiskey is popular? Is it better to buy here, and check it in or in duty free?

you are looking to buy a 50 dollar whiskey. At best you will save 5-10 bucks..... seriously? Does this need a post?

50 bucks - you aren’t picking anything nuanced. I’d pick like a Oban 10, or talisker just so you aren’t picking the ubiquitous glenevet / glenfiddich. But really depends on what you like, complex, smoky Peaty etc

My advice would be exact opposite and buy it from a big liquor chain here, you can someone to help you out and get good deals and great price point. I’m in the Midwest and Binnys is my go to for it. Second suggestion would be, buy it in Delhi/Mumbai duty free, they have a bunch of people hassling you; but push them for a few and they’ll get you some discount or some other freebie thrown in. Everyone buys scotch so it’s usually got some big promotion (they only tend to advertise the double promotions aka buy 2 bottles). DXB is very well priced, but I often found better prices locally in the US (when I looked at specific items) and I don’t seem to have any luck with the one off discounts I usually get from the guys at Delhi airport. Also, if you actually care; go with older scotch, the older typically better, the 12 year ones are standard and 16 is something which is “nicer” and often priced not so much higher. The rest is more of a flavor profile, but I’m not sure your dad will care as much about it. Finally, if you care about volume, the duty free is the best, because they do 1L bottles and you can bring 2 liters without hassle. US packaging is 750 ml unless you specifically look for it. Another recommendation is Balvenie 12 yr or 15 yr old. Pricier than Glenfiddich and Glenlivet, but very very good!

For Smoky flavor i would vote for lagavulin 16, balevine 12 or Oban.

Buy it from Dubai Duty Free. Best prices What’s your budget? A good whisky can range anywhere from $50, $60 - $300+

Something around $50

Get Glenfiddich or Glenlivet 12 year old. Cannot to wrong with either.

Also, if I buy here and check them in, can I buy more in Dubai duty free and take them as carry on?

Yes you can, but I don’t recommend buying them here and checking them in. It would be a hassle. Also, alcohol is quite expensive from what I’ve seen in Seattle. You’re better off buying the entire stock from DXB

You cannot take more than 2 liter of whiskey per ticket. In DXB and most US airports they bring it to your seat once you pay and give your itinerary details. Don’t fall for those deals where they give a bag free with buying two same bottles which I think is always on double black Chivas. You can still buy it if your dad is a big fan of those brands.

Gotcha. I just have 1 hr 20 minutes of layover, so it should be fine. Hopefully 1 hour is enough to go to the duty free shop and buy it

Be careful with Emirates. Sometimes it’s odd that they stop you at the gate if your carryon luggage is more than 8 kg including duty free.

Don’t stress it. Just buy at Delhi/India arriving airport. The difference is going to be marginal, if any. I have always found Delhi Duty free to be cheaper than US.

SA1 knows his scotch. Lagavulin and oban are on smoky side. Belvani or Macallen are smooth. Glenlevit and glendeffich are staple. But folks in india don't appreciate scotch much so black label best

Clearly not. Find me a lagavulin for 50 bucks please !!’
