Context: Married with first baby on the way. Plan is for my spouse to stay home with our (future) kids for next few years. My income is $250-300K and keeping it that way for a while as I’ve moved off partner track for at least 2-3 years as we start our family.
$120K in retirement accounts, $70K in cash, $50K in home equity, and $6K in HSA
Beyond mortgage, only debt is a $25K private loan that we can pay back any time in next 5 yrs. and isn’t accruing interest.
That sure sounds like a definition of freedom. If you're situated like that you've certainly got a huge set of advantages in today's world. There are entire industries arrayed to lead us into debt, and being free of debt is definitely a special sort of freedom.
I definitely do not enjoy taking on debt! I always prioritize paying off the loans as quickly as possible to avoid those nasty interest fees!

It's such a good feeling to own your car outright. And if you're lucky you own your home outright.
I would also add being able to buy whatever you want at the grocery store. When you don't have to hem and haw over a $5.99/lb fancy cheese ...
That’s the best feeling in the world! My wife and I agree that once we have our home and cars paid off! We should celebrate with a fancy vacation!
Or having passive income that allows you to work whenever you want, if at all!
Right! As long as you don’t have loans that is definitely something you can build towards like real

That’s a wonderful type of freedom but sadly becoming harder all the time.
I agree though very accurate
I’m working hard towards paying off my mortgage in the next 5 years and still have about 20 working years left to hopefully be set for retirement but we shall see
And having passive income so you don’t have to work
Right on! That would be the dream! Passive income if the ultimate goal! Not because of the finances but because it allows you to free your time to do whatever you enjoy doing
