True or False: If a partner sends perfect emails (spelling, grammar, and punctuation), they ain’t really a boss. In other words, more short hand = more of a boss.

False. If they’re a boss, then they’re rolling deep in originations, equity, and client management emails (that you’re not cc’ed on)… they’re not so overwhelmed in producing work product/hours so there’s less obligatory shorthand for time saving purposes.

This has no real bearing on whether they are a “boss” or not.

I’m with C1, I don’t really see what you mean OP. Maybe I’m missing something, but I don’t see how a lack of typos makes you less of a boss?

A partner emailed me today that a provision in an employment agreement wasn't predicated on receiving "Versace". (It took me a while, but I think he meant severance.)

Decidedly not a boss.

False.

True. Also more ellipses…more of a boss…

Is anyone else struggling with feeling like they’re getting dumped on right now? My PM transferred a decent amount of work to my plate at the start of Covid and it seems to keep piling on. I also notice that they’re never online anymore. I feel like everything just got offloaded and dumped on me. I know everyone is having a tough time right now, but I basically don’t have a PM anymore and I’ve expressed to them I’m overwhelmed and at low bandwidth and I’ve gotten no support

I have a direct report who is smart, passionate about her job and can be really innovative. However she carries this enormous weight of responsibility, for needing to do everything, do it right, make sure it's perfect, not trusting colleagues to help. It creates dread and panic and overwhelming workload and a terrible attitude for her and I am speaking with her this week to start to shift her mindset. Any tips in navigating how to let go of this heavy idea of "responsibility"?

Hey all, what do you usually talk/share in your 1:1 meeting with your supervisor? I think I should take this opportunity to get feedback from him or share some goals and vision, other than that I feel nervous and don't know what to talk about. In addition, sometimes I'm afraid to be judged by him if I have nothing to say. Any advice? Thanks. :)

I added a well recognized litigator in my area at a top firm on LinkedIn... reason being is that I’m a first year in litigation and hope to accomplish at least half the things he has in my career. So it’s interesting to see his takes on things when he engages on a post.

I’m tempted to send him a personal message, not for a job or anything, but honestly just to ask “how he did it” and what advice he might give.

Is there any harm in this? Don’t wanna be annoying.

Hi,
I just joined a company, I liked the work as per JD, but when I entered the team, I feel there is not much to learn and grow in that particular team. There are different teams in the department in which I am hired. Can I ask the AVP of department to shift me in another team of same department, I have joined the organization 1 week ago, shall I talk to my TL before telling AVP or should not say at all. Will it create any bad image of me infront of my AVP and my TL. Plz suggest..

I’m leaving employment litigation.

Most of these disputes are so petty and almost every case is about making up makeshift reasons for what would otherwise be wrongful termination.

You see people being fired where the actual reason is for instance hooking up with the CEO’s young female crush, or speaking up about issues in the workplace.

Even the most innocuous detail can be turned against an employee. Eating lunch at your desk can e.g. easily be labelled as being ‘uncooperative’.

Hoping for some guidance. Junior associate here (3rd year). I’ve brought in 3 clients. Nothing major. ~ $500,000 in billings. I have an opportunity to lateral to a practice area I am very passionate about but my clients have active matters and therefore, likely wouldn’t come with me. Would I be stupid to leave my firm? Is half a mill in billings enough to even move the needle? The goal is to make partner. I’m worried that by leaving, I’d be giving up a real shot at partnership. Thank you!
