Soft skills as others have mentioned are likely the cause. Stereotypically speaking, technical resources will tend to express opinions directly, provide solutions based on a logical criteria that may not account for social nuances, and be more disinterested in small talk/polite banter. All these aspects can make consultant folks, who are generally an outgoing bunch, feel off when working with them. I work in tech consulting, so to me the idea of not wanting the go to technical resource on the team due to soft skills is the height of stupidity. The point of a team is to cover each other’s weaknesses, and if soft skills are the weakness a group of consultants can’t cover, why ate they even in the industry? Mind you I’m not saying that the tech resource is absolved of responsibility, but there’s only so much growth you can expect out of someone.

Is this feedback or something? Sounds like the person is kind of a dick or so unpolished you don’t want them in front of a client

No language barrier D2.

Sounds like they are smart, but pretty rough around the edges, which makes them less desirable as a teammate.

What do you mean inclusion? Good soft skills are harder to come by. You could hypothetically replace any technical person with an entire team of offshore resources.

like

"inclusion" meaning staffed on the project. Your offshore experience are different then mine. Technical projects is broad and some technical done offshore is blantantly evident in my experience.

Sounds like personality and how they communicate with other colleagues.

That’s how a lot of technical people are.

I had a data scientist tech lead on a project that I was the engagement manager for. The dude was legit brilliant and was probably the smartest and most technically skilled data scientist I've ever worked with...but he was totally unable to translate tech-speak into business-speak and was kept from being client facing as a result. Day to day interactions with the non-technical business client had to go through either the functional lead or myself. Could be something like that in this case. If the position has to be client facing, I'd be hesitant to staff that data scientist dude knowing what I know about him.

like

because there's “just something about working with them” (actual words from their co-workers). What is that "something" that is being referred to that puts people off.

This makes more sense. It's their people skills. Bad attitude or lack of awareness about how to communicate in professional/productive ways

like

Maybe they’re good at being technical but aren’t good at explaining things so that people understand? That can feel condescending sometimes.

Thanks 🐟 this makes more sense now.

Great discussion!

I’m a partner at a small firm looking to lateral. Many firms that were beyond my reach a year ago are now eager to pick me up. Firms that I should be selling myself to are instead selling their firm to me. (And I am a very confident person; no imposter syndrome here.) Is there some larger diversity push going on? Is it hard for bigger firms to retain female partners? Curious what the market is.

I am looking to gain certification or other credentialing in diversity and inclusion, not only because it would look good on my resume both for future job-search purposes and also to become better educated in this area, which is growing in importance. My fellow black Green Dots (Deloitte), have you read the email from Janet? I am glad to be working at a company that openly acknowledges what the black community has been going through with COVID. Coming from a previous company that was borderline and at times blatantly racist, it was such a warm feeling to see such a message from our CEO. While at many companies there is room for improvement with inclusion policies, I do think that Deloitte is doing a much better job than most. Thoughts?

My husband suggested a gender reversal role play the other night (ie I (a female) dress in the traditionally masculine way and he dress as a woman) - he seemed really nervous suggesting it. In the same night he asked me to paint his nails with clear polish - is this him exploring his gender expression? How seriously do I take this? What can I do to support him if this is the case without making him feel threatened? Also, would appreciate any help in how to think about this myself as I want cont.
