Trying to get a sense of what's market comp for an in-house role:
-GC of a fast-growing software development, data science, and design shop (first legal hire)
-Requires 3+ years experience in-house and/or firm experience with commercial contracts and/or technology licensing
-Living in or willing to move to Southern California
-Reasonable work-life expectations (roughly 40 hour work week)

I'd also question HARD whether a 40 hr week would be anywhere close to possible at a fast growing startup in a legal team of 1.

I was a solo at a C,D and E startup and regularly dealt with far more than that.

I would question if is 3+ is enough. If you have the budget, I would go 5+ with your first legal hire since there would be no supervision.

Base needs to be 200K+, maybe closer to 250 for a more senior hire. You’ll need to give shares based on stage of the company, valuation and RSU value. For bonus, it’s all variable and negotiable.

Feel free to DM w/ more details and can give my 2c.

Agreed—and I’m a fourth year who went in house after three years of experience. I’d recommend 5+ or 6+ (at least).

helpful

agree 3 years is not sufficient you need 5+ preferable 7-8+ with corporate background as well as tech trans. for this person if you want them to be good 250+ with equity, bonus and severance

Curious to hear from people with med school debt: what is the best way to finance med school? Is taking on student debt a big deal if you get a high-paying job after school? The reason I ask: I paid for my son's BS degree (including housing and meal plans), and he's entering med school soon. He has asked if I will pay anything towards his support in med school. But he worked all through his undergrad degree and saved sine I was paying for the major expenses, so I kind of feel like this is his thing to take on now. AITA?
