Trying to leave advertising for tech. Made it through final rounds of the interviewing process and they called today to offer me a position two levels below what I interviewed for. They say I have a really strong foundation as a PM but they are worried about my tech skills and not ramping up fast enough. Trying to figure out the best way forward… thinking of either letting it go or trying to negotiate the next level up with probational consideration for the original level I interviewed at. 1/2

The right company will have the resources to onboard you and not be intimidated by the onboarding process… then you can pivot to your dream place! Just saying this in case it doesn’t work out

like

I say this bc I tried for years to get into pharma (incredibly tough industry to break into if you didn’t start in it) and eventually I found a company - which was part of the big 4 holding advertising companies who was not daunted by it and welcomed diverse experience. I learned the trade, did good work for a while, then eventually was able to pivot to a higher paying position in a different sector

Ultimately this is going to depend on how badly you want to pivot out, confidence in your own abilities, and how much you trust the company you are interviewing to right size your level via fast track promotions. I’ve made pivots and taken a role one level my junior but only because the company had a very strong record for fast promotions.

I would first explain why you believe you meet the criteria for the position you interviewed for, referencing specific technical knowledge or examples where you’ve leveled up in the past. If they push on you, shoot for as high a salary as you can realistically ask for, in this job market I would not make a pivot while taking a pay cut.

If you made it to the final round they must like you, if you are firm but confident it’s well within your right to make a case on your own behalf.

Important to note that during the interview process, the hiring manager herself said that lack of strong tech skills was fine because a strong PM can always pick that up/learn it quickly since all other skills across industries are transferable. 2/2

Hey friend, I do a different job role but I recently kind of did this pivot - I went from an ad agency to a tech-specific content agency, and got a title bump in the process (though Fishbowl hasn't recognised it yet)!

When I was interviewing, the recruiter said I'd have a bit of an uphill battle to prove I had enough tech experience, which for me meant sending across a portfolio of writing. Although I didn't have a lot that was specifically tech, I did have a lot of B2B stuff that was pretty technical and required a lot of specialist knowledge. So with that I was able to show I had the ability/skills, just not the knowledge yet - and the company was willing to give me the chance to learn about the industry and their clients. So I'd recommend doing what you can with your CV/cover letter to show those transferrable skills.

Unfortunately, a lot of companies are very unwilling to take any kind of risks with hiring and want a candidate who ticks all the boxes and can "hit the ground running". I was lucky to come across a place that liked me and was willing to spend a bit of time onboarding me. To be honest with you, if a company DOESN'T want to spend a few weeks getting you up to speed then I'd take that as a red flag - it usually means they're completely drowning in work and you'll be thrown in the deep end.

Thank you all for your advice! Part of my interview process included a case study scenario, which I was only given 45 minutes to prepare for, so I believe I was able to show plenty of transferable skills through that. I also broke into pharma 3 years into my career, and did so well/became such an asset to the team that I was promoted 10 months in so I’m pretty confident in my abilities to adapt quickly if given the opportunity to prove myself. This company also spends 1-2 months onboarding veteran tech PMs, so it’s not like they don’t actually have the time or resources to onboard.

All in all, seems that since I don’t really have much to lose here (I enjoy my current team and am not in a hurry to leave). I’ll push and make a case for myself to see if I can get them to budge. Thanks again!
