4 yrs experience, was making 55k from a corporate job but just jumped into freelance full-time so 👌🏻 Estimating least 70-75k pre tax for this first year or so, it’ll come out to about the same net amount. Hourly rate ranges from $45-75/hr
How did you get your clients when freelancing?
I was in graphics/physical/industrial design for 5 years and then switched to this field 5 years ago but did not get a title change until recently. I used to get up to 90k base with my old title without bonus or stocks. Now with a product designer title as I moved to a digital segment of the company, I got 120k base + 8k bonus + 30k stocks.

My two cents: YOE could be the only indicator to get a sense of salaries but when it comes to the field of UX, which severely lacks any standardization and barriers of entry, it’s difficult to make a good sense of it. When we hire, candidates who did 10 years of pure UI production work vs 2 years of actual UX following the double diamond process & user research, the latter is always favored because it’s experience in UX theater vs experience in actual UX.

Switched careers to become a UX designer, just under 2 years of experience now but over 10 years general work experience. Am now at a base of 72k plus bonuses (between 5k-10k depending on billable work available).
I’m with a smaller agency that is still ran like a start up.

Wow all of these salaries are shockingly lower than I expected. I thought product designers often make over $200k? Or is that only at big tech companies?
I think that’s for bigger tech/fintech/FAANG. And even then it’ll usually be TC for mid - senior level designers
