2 - it’s a significant difference at this level. 200k vs 238k isn’t much of a difference but you are talking about double the salary. It also means you’re starting lower so will take you longer for it to go up. It’s hard to live on a 32k salary imo.
#2 for sure unless there’s some other underlying reason you want to be in #1. I prefer looking at it from a long term perspective, so I’d take a cut to move to Google or a big 4 consulting firm with the clear intention that it’s an investment that will open doors to higher paying opportunities. That’s really the only time #1 would make sense to me.
Otherwise #2, the salary you start with determines your salary for the rest of your time there so always start as high as you can.
Is there some reason you’re unsure about #2?

Huge red flag that they are offering you low pay to be “fair to other people”. Sounds like in a year your comp would be determined by “what everyone else with one year is getting”. Your compensation should reflect what YOU are worth to the market (which you know is at least 80k), not what other people are worth/have accepted. I would run far from 1.
Tell number 1 abt your 2nd offer. See if they will match or increase. If not do number 2, and hop in a year.
Thanks! I think 2-3 years with 1 promotion is a good tenure. I’ve never lasted 3 years with a company that’s what I’d like to achieve !!
Update from OP. I accepted job number 2! Thanks for all your suggestions and sharing your experiences. 🙏
Congratulations! I enjoyed reading your situation and all the great responses. Live confidently in the direction of your dreams!

2… making the role what you want sounds like it will be fulfilling. 1 seems like they know you’re ready for a higher level role but kind of want you to prove it in six months.. and I guess when you do get that promotion, chances are it won’t double your salary. I get some of the other perks make 1 appealing, but I just think their offer is too low. I’d definitely tell them they’re your first choice however you have an offer for double on the table and see if there’s a chance they can offer more.
Thank you for your response!! They’re not budging on salary I’m afraid. 🤝

What are the benefits? I'm guessing they're not enough to make up for the $38k difference, but I could be wrong.
Hey! Thanks.
30 days annual leave (I’m in the UK)
MacBook
Company phone
Fully remote (work from anywhere policy)
Quarterly discretionary bonuses (total to roughly 1k per year)
So great benefits but they don’t make up the difference in a financial sense.

#2, if the manager you report to is helpful, making a role your own is huge for your resume.
OP: Ps I’m getting married next year so the money would really help !!
Thank you !!!
Your skills are favoured at both companies however seems to me #2 knows how much you are really worth in your industry. That initial investment from #2 is so nice. If you go to 1# you may feel underappreciated knowing someone else was willing to pay more for you.
It's all about opportunity cost in my opinion and salary helps with that alot!

Do not accept 32k. Company either can’t manage its finances or doesn’t treat its people well.
More information is needed: company size, upsize, and development opportunities. I know everyone is saying go with company #2, but I would ask more questions.
- The role can't be both entry and mid-level. If so, why is it being classified this way? Maybe they don't know what they want and may set the wrong expectations.
- If it's a newly created role and they say you can make your own, there is no defined career path, and you will need to be your advocate. Promotions may be complicated with no career path. Or the opposite, you will be able to get promoted quickly based on your impact.
- Why was the role created? Was someone being overworked? (This key as you may be the first out if there is not enough work to go around) Is this part of a new business line? (This is a great opportunity, means the company is growing?)
You have to think about the immediate and the long term, so don't be afraid to ask more questions to understand better why the opportunities are available and how they see the role evolving.
Hi!! Thank you for your response. These are honestly such great questions. And ones to pose and get clarity on 100%.
had a similar situation a few weeks ago. I went back to my company 1 and told them what the other offered me. they said they couldn’t match or even come close. so I picked company 2. it was a tough decision bc I also preferred company 1, but I have no regrets! Especially in this economy, money is money.
Thanks for sharing! You’re right sometimes you just have to follow the money !!
Does your SO make enough money that the $40k difference isn’t significant/ do you plan to stop working in the near future to have kids or something anyway? Otherwise, not sure why you’d take a job for less than half the pay unless you are working just for funsies
I vote for this - sounds like your present & future self are joining forces on this one!
And your future-amazing-baby will be THRILLED to have you with them! Congrats - what an exciting time in life!
Take the 70k & run!!!

#2 and just make friends with the one you really connected with from #1. LOL
Job 2 - seems like they better understand liveable wages for professional. You need money to live!
#1 are not budging on the salary btw!! I did ask.
Always negotiate! Even if they say no, you gotta ask. Why leave money on the table
