1. Got: My parents used to have a time share condo. When I was getting my greencard and wasn’t allowed to leave the US during Christmas they let us use their timeshare week at a place in the US Virgin Islands. So even though I couldn’t see my family I wasn’t moping in my apartment about it.
2. Given: That year everyone in my family and a few of my close friends decided to forego Christmas gifts so we could sponsor a Syrian family with 2 little boys to resettle in Canada. We’ve stopped giving gifts and just do donations now.
1. I’m Jewish, but my Game Boy was pretty monumental ~30 years ago
2. This year I’m taking my husband to Paris. I’ve never gifted something so extravagant, and I’m super excited to give him the card telling him. Having a tough time waiting until the morning!!!
1. My now-husband gave me custom slippers which each look like my bulldog’s head
2. My husband’s mom passed away. I gathered her handwriting from old greeting cards and had it made into a message on a bronze keychain. I later had her spaghetti and meatball recipe printed in gold foil and framed - it hangs in our kitchen. He makes it every Christmas.
My sister gave me the complete Otis Redding box set one year. That was my favorite gift all time.
An old girlfriend gave me the same gift literally 20 years ago this night.
1. The year is 1999, all my cousins are getting shitty gifts and I see a little Sony logo in the corner of my half opened gift. It can’t be what I think it is... wait, is it? Oh shit, IT IS! It’s a freaking PlayStation! To this day the absolute best gift I’ve ever had.
2. My mom loves designer bags but she doesn’t make a lot of money so she never gets to treat herself despite working her ass off to provide for my siblings. Last year is when I started my career and I started being able to afford things I couldn’t buy before so I bought her a designer bag and jewelry. The look on her face and knowing that from now on I’ll be able to help her out if she needs anything was priceless.
Received: grandfather bought me a trip across Europe when I was 18 and gave it to me right before he died.
Given: my dad took all family photos growing up on slides that were developed then put away and never seen again for 35+ years. I went through thousands of slides of family trips, births, parties, etc. and had dozens printed, matted and framed and created a wall-to-wall collage wall for my mom.
Love your photo gift! That’s a lot of work, very thoughtful. I’ve been “meaning” to do something like this for over a decade. In my family though it’s mostly audio on cassette tapes- I don’t know where to start. My grandpa was a musician so he used to record us singing and telling silly kid stories about school and stuff. There are easily hundreds of these. One day..
Me. On both counts.
