Sorry op :( glad you weren’t hurt
Mistakes happen; everything will be fine; it’s just material
Oh, and correction, my Dad has done this not once, but twice. The second time was a Whole Foods parking garage, so his garbage can trick didn't work for that... 😂
Out of pocket may be your best best. Also get bike racks for the back of the car ....
I told myself "bike, bike, bike" 30 times on my way home, but when it came time, I drove right in. My husband was trying to show me something on his phone, so I was distracted. Minimal building damage, their plastic opener sensor plate is broken, but the sensor still works. Bike was old and he already has a new one. Bike rack plastic piece broke, the entire rack came off, so maybe need new towers, but the crossbars are fine. Depending how much the plastic plate on the building is, can't decide if I should just claim it, or not. I'll talk to the building tomorrow. Anyone do anything similar? I know my Dad definitely has. He puts a big garbage can in front of him so he can't drive in, but I can't do that with a condo. Oh and the car has a scratch, and small dents where the towers were. Anyone know if the damage to the bike and rack would be under my renters policy? Or does things I attach to my car fall under the auto policy?
I’ve done this with mostly rack damage. My brother did this one time and totaled an older BMW. Glad your car is mostly OK.
Since the bike is old and car is only slightly damaged, I wouldn’t bother with an insurance claim on any policy. You probably have a deductible and they may raise your rates.
Yeah, deductible is $500. Wasn't sure if my building is going to claim an outrageous amount to fix this sensor plate thing (it functionally still opens and shuts the garage, so just aesthetic)
Smart people make mistakes sometimes, and that’s what insurance is for. Don’t sweat it.
I have 2 of the back mounted ones, but they are so annoying to take on and off. Car is a hatchback. Maybe get a hitch, and hitch mount?
Yea I gave up on roof racks. They look cool, but you have the clearance issue + wind noise + car wash issues (which did more damage to my car than hitting a the garage)
#1 reason I got a hitch installed and bought a hitch mounted rack.
Well there goes your bonus
We have friends that hang stuff from the inside visors of the car when they have a bike on top....my colleague's wife did this with a brand new 10k road bike 😳. Happens all the time unfortunately.
OP, get maybe a Thule or OneUpUSA - I have a hatchback and the ability to drop the rack to an angle with bikes still on allows you to open hatchback with bikes on. Pretty great.
I'll check that out. Yeah, luckily it was my husband's now 20-year old aluminum frame turned beach cruiser bike, so the bike was minimal. The building called and say the entire RFID sensor thing needs to be replaced, so definitely going through insurance...🙄
Let us know what the building charges!
