Ugh— I keep getting told to eat hours.... of course without ‘formally’ saying it and feel that now I’m getting targeted because I’m not— it’s not the first time i’m told it’s just ‘the nature of the work we do’ but it’s not!! I’ve been on teams that actually follow the rule on this. Anyone experienced this before? How did you handle? It’s a tough spot because in a way it is ‘expected’ pending your team leadership but it’s also against firm policy.... but you don’t want to get a bad rep. HELP

I experienced this in my previous job in consulting. I straight up ignored the “requests” to eat hours. If my manager/director was trying to make it a thing (which happened once) I sent them an email with the partner copied on it, asking them point blank how many hours the team was expected to eat. The partner lost it on them, as they deserved.

DO NoT EAT HOURS!! Communicate to superiors how long a task should take and deliver.

Don’t eat hours. I’ve never told, eluded or implied to anyone to eat hours. If the budget is not realistic I need to know. If we aren’t billing enough I need to know. I’m not saying load up the code with extra time that you aren’t working but please record all your time.

like

eating hours is illegal.

People can complain about you hitting the code all they want, but I’ve never seen anyone with 100% utilization get fired.

I have at PWC 3. There is a balance needed between good work product and efficiency. Typically, ppl with bad work or just not getting it will not be picked up for jobs and be coached out, which takes a good amount of time, but I have seen someone who clearly didn’t get it and won’t get it that was 300 hours over their budgeted charge hours let go. It happens but is rare. Their utilization will typically drop as a result of no one wanting to use them before

I also had inconsistent experiences team to team. The way I handled it was if I wanted off the project or to avoid rolling with the partner to their next client, I would bill my actual time. If I liked the partner and the work, I would just bill 40. Before you engage in this strategy, make sure you have the support of your PML.

Same - though I’m currently on the bench, I’ve been asked to do multiple assignments for different engagements (without being allowed to charge a billable charge code). I know it’s not the same since I anyways have hours to spare but it fundamentally doesn’t seem right that I would be helping on so many engagements and not be able to bill to them. Anyone else had this experience on the bench?

If you're on the bench, charge to the job! Dont lower your utilization rate for someone else to save their budget.

At the end of the day in only hurts you!! You want as high utilization soo

A couple directors asked me to and I told them to pound sand. If it doesn’t feel right, it’s not right. If you don’t feel comfortable speaking with them directly, contact the ethics and compliance hotline.

Nope, do not listen to Pwc1.

Also, PWC1 why the change in tune? Your first post clear stated “DO NOT EAT HOURS”. Just because 1 colleague told OP not to follow firm policy, doesn’t mean they should listen.

like

OP - I’m with KPMG as well and this is against firm policy. You’re encouraged to raised concerns in this regard. Check out the time reporting page in the policy center for more details.

Don’t eat hours, but do yourself a favor and document what you spent your time on. I feel less stressed/unsure about charging all my hours if I have a report I can pull when/if someone challenges me on them.

If your comp structure is utilization based, don’t eat hours.

If it’s not, maximize whatever metrics / relationships get you the best bonus, promotion and career advancement.

I ate hours for years cause it made the life of my managers and directors easier...and that was my focus - do great work and make life easier for my bosses. Made director at year 6 so I’d say it worked

Any recommendations for a work bag that can carry a lot, but still looks put together? I typically have my laptop and a small pouch with tools (I’m in tech sales/support), plus wallet and a small bag for lipsticks etc. Bonus points if it is comfortable to carry.

My current bag is an older version of this Sherpani tote. I like the look but it’s too small.

Could use some advice (23 yo): currently allocating close to my max in a Post Tax 401k to Target Date Fund, max my Roth IRA every year in Vanguard’s VOO, as well as have ~$6,000 in another VOO fund. I started trading on Robinhood ~5 months where I casually throw $500-$1000 every other month depending on expenses to some of my fav stocks. Should I continue to play stocks like this or do more of a sector wide approach within Robinhood even though I am pretty diverse with VOO?

How frequent are team changes in advisory? I spent 3 years on the same audit client. I joined kpmg advisory in January and I've been on 3 teams in the last year here.

Is that normal? The last 2 contracts, 1 was downsized mid contract year, and the other simply wasn't renewed for a new option year, so it's not due to my performance.

I'm getting tired of learning new people and workflows, and I'm considering leaving bc of it, but I wanted to see if it was common before I made any rash decisions
