I’ve tried a lot. The most effective thing I’ve found is really leaning into the students. Pick one of the ones that are the most under your skin. Make a point to sit by them and talk to them. Ask them who they live with, what they do after school, what they do with their friends, do they have pets, their favorite animal. And add in your own info or stories (I never tell more than they could learn from my instagram or Facebook - keep it surface). Don’t attach it to academics. Save that for later. Ive found it serves two purposes: At first, it keeps them from goofing off as much because they have to answer your questions and you are sitting with them. But then, after a few days or weeks they start to feel like you care, and if you’ve been sharing with them as well, they feel like they know you a bit beyond your job. The more they feel connected to you as a human, the better they start to do. Sometimes their friends even follow suit. It’s hard to lean in to the ones that make you want to shave your head and jump out a window screaming, but I’ve found it’s the only thing (if anything) that has worked for me. It’s a frustrating and long process and it’s never over, but it has helped me in the past.
Wonderful advice! Also pick that one student you do have successes with, acknowledge, them publicly and inform their parents and other teachers. I also keep a KIDOS FILE that I refer to now and then to pick up my spirits!
Change up your day or approach... I was feeling super burnt out last year and then this year I started year out differently and changed it up... I focused less on standards and curriculum and more in relationships and fun! I have the best class I have ever had... and I have the most fun I have had... I think it is because of my change!?!?
