I don’t understand why they think their entire situation is ‘luck.’
I mean, she negotiated a higher paying job and got it. That sounds like skill? Also, choosing to move back in with parents and no longer having to pay rent? That isn’t luck either. That option is usually one that’s always available if you’re willing to live at home...

The negotiation probably only happened because someone somewhere informed her that it was an option, which she views as lucky to have happened.
And D2 is right, I had to pay my parents "rent" once I turned 18, because they couldn't afford me living with them and not contributing. Plus her parents probably live no where near her new job, so going online was luck, as well.

OMG there’s so much financial nonsense here, I don’t even know where to begin. And now she’s drawing conclusions from it?!?
E.g.
- Concludes that retirement funds are “collecting dust” and cashes them out, incurring early withdrawal penalties
- Earns first real money, immediately buys $2000 in stocks, sees it decrease in value in a month? And immediately sells it at a loss
- Is “out of debt” for two seconds and buys a fixer-upper home
- Considers the amount of money that’s not going into student loan repayment because the government put it on hold as “savings”
- Considers COVID-level of living expenses as a permanent change
- Based on all her financial wisdom, considers herself a “WINNER” and that her “wins” are a product of a rigged system 🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️
>>> So when her finances crashes and burns again, we should take that as vindication that the system is fair?? 😂
She’s right about one thing, she’s definitely not in control of her finances or her life based on these constant life decisions made on a whim.
Alert: 🚨 This is the LOW CALIBER OF PEOPLE with a tenure track professor position at a university!

In the age of Google where you can learn just about any skill with sheer will power and effort, there is no reason to not know how to manage your finances. The lady makes poor decisions and blames the system because she'd rather play the victim card than take ownership and learn.
How you do anything is how you do everything.
What did I just read? This is nonsense
The biggest error here is taking on a bunch of debt to pursue a career with extremely limited earning potential. I still don’t understand why people don’t look at the salary they’ll earn before spending the money.

OP, class mobility is pretty low in the United States when you compare it to other developing nations. So she does have a point.
Pro
OP, developing nations have notoriously low social mobility - if you are born in the lowest economic class, you are unlikely to climb out of it. Now economic development may mean your standard of living may improve but your relative position in the social ladder will remain the same

Sorry what’s unfortunate?

Not sure if you’re a woman or not OP, but as a woman myself I get exactly where she’s coming from and it makes sense to me. Not saying it’s a good thing or a bad thing, but her statements seem very in line with the type of mentality that a woman, esp a woman of color, has been conditioned with her entire life. So your comment and last sentence especially about people choosing to accept these things is lacking some very important and essential nuance imo
Too self-centered to realize the “unearned privilege” of living with her family was earned by her parents
