Universities BUILT by enslaved Africans ON indigenous land ran by white men, with less than 10% of tenured professors of color have the audacity to ask us for a diversity statement 😂 Sickening

On school applications, applicants are often asked for a statement detailing their commitment to diversity.

I think this is basically what OP is getting at.

If this were the ONLY thing they were doing, I agree that would be effed up. But if it’s one tool in a broader suite, I don’t see the problem

As a Latino, I am all for diversity and equal opportunity. But forcing institutions to have a particular quota is BS. I am not anybody’s token latino, f’ck that! All I ask is an equal opportunity to get the f’cking job. I refused to be parade around as “look we are cool bc we have a latino in the X seat” while the organization still offers zero equal opportunities to minorities.

Agreed. And as an Indian American I would get lumped in with Asian candidates and compared to them to cap quota rather than being compared to everyone in general making it impossible for me to live up to high testing standards international Asian students usually have.

Universities and making students jump through meaningless hoops that don't even apply if your parents have enough money, name a better combination

Well, while you aren’t necessarily wrong, to make progress (in any which way you can), you’ve got to take some steps. Asking for a diversity statement isn’t necessarily as concrete a step in changing the dynamics as e.g. putting strict policies in place that identify discrimination and bias, and punish those who indulge in it, but it’s a form of commitment (an attestation in good faith), that you (the individual) are/will remain committed to the cause. I don’t see a problem with it. I do see a problem with it being the only step a university may take towards resolving disparity. A statement is holding you (the applicant) to your word. Remember the times when someone’s word was their bond?

C1, yes that’s why I said that the statement alone isn’t going to change a thing, because for those who don’t believe in diversity, it’s just an administrative checkbox. That is why there must be other more concrete practical steps that must be taken to continue to promote diversity. It’s not an easy process, and it can be frustrating for many because it (the fight for diversity) would often seem like an overkill. Also, regardless of what policy, statement, laws etc you may make, you’re never going to get rid of discrimination completely. It’s because human nature is driven by inherent biases against others that aren’t like them (whether race, ethnicity, language, religion, social stature, gender etc.). But just because we know that discrimination will continue to exist does not mean we don’t work towards eradicating it either. It’s like fighting to reduce the impact of COVID. Viruses will continue to exist, in one way shape or form, but the world makes efforts to develop vaccines and its way of life to tackle them.
