I’m a mentor for a summer associate who I believe could be a great lawyer here (V100, small market if that matters). However, it is apparent he has no understanding of technology (redlines, word, excel). Based on his background, I believe it’s due to a lack of access. Would you ever recommend to your firm that he be given a course to catch up? Should I try and get him training on my own? Stay out of it? I dont want to overstep but believe this would help him as this puts him way behind his peers

In small companies (especially startups), where HR may not really exist or the HR person may be the main violator, how do you deal with inappropriate behavior. If a person has been there a long time and is "too important to fire" how do you handle them?

At a startup I left because of this, my boss had been there since day 1. He was a nightmare. The last straw was when he took out his anger at a home issue on me and made fun of me for being upset. HR told me they couldn't do anything about him.

Just conducted my first deposition and did not go as I had hoped. Was the 3rd named defendant so had to limit my time (around 2 hours) and the witness was so aloof (basically answered “I don’t know” to everything). I should have been firmer in my questioning and pushed even harder. Boss, who was watching, said don’t worry about it and it went exactlty how a first depo is supposed to go. But I’m still beating myself up and feel like I let him down...
