Ad school. Any agency worth anything will pay you something.
good agency? internship. no name shitshop? school
As school please! Not only should you get paid for your work (internship) but you’re more likely to get HIRED with the ad school experience.
I got a job right out of ad school. Miami Ad School prepares you well.
An ACD is asking this..?
What if they’re an ACD brand side or for a small shop or one that specializing in nothing but local car ads? Titles don’t mean everything. I’m an AD and have the same questions as OP.
Internship
Ad school, unless you intern at a BIG name like WK, I’m not sure how much value an internship has when looking for a full time gig.
My (paid) internship converted to a full-time job and within three months got me enough experience to become more competitive for entry level jobs. Getting to work with real clients looks great, and while I’m a really big fan of the internship route for experience, I hate the idea of going to an unpaid one! I don’t know an agency worth its snuff that wouldn’t pay an intern— it leads me to think they don’t have big/ great clients that would get you the exposure to client work that would make your book stand out in three months, or whatever time span you’d have there before you run out of money and need to get a paying job. Seems risky (especially if you’re anything like me coming out of college with $400 to my name and sleeping on friend’s couch!!). Ask their conversion rate of internships to jobs within the company, and check the placement rate of graduates at the portfolio schools you’re looking at to help weigh your chances of getting a job somewhere. Good luck!!
Paid internship. Don’t take unpaid, and don’t waste money on ad school if you don’t need to.
Both.
Anecdotally, I took an unpaid internship without going to ad school. I didn't learn much there (the shop wasn't very creative). But I was able to walk out of there with a bad print ad and a handful of social posts produced. I used those to leverage a paid internship at a good creative agency and have been there ever since. At times I've felt disadvantaged over my ad school peers, but if you're a quick study and always stay on top of what's going on, real world experience is invaluable.
It doesn't make sense, I know. Without ad school's first semester Intro to ACDing class, I thought I was doomed.
Do you have a degree? Don’t take an unpaid internship. Your time is worth money and also it’s most likely illegal for a company not to pay you
Ad school. Unpaid internship gets u connections at that agency. Ad school gets u connections at every agency.
internship
Who tf is doing unpaid spots?
Depends on where the internship is
