Unpopular opinion: the latest changes to H1B visa program are acceptable and ultimately serve a good purpose in the long run.

It will affect US universities and the jobs there, immigration lawyers in America. Also, there are articles out there explaining how foreign folks can help actually improve the economy. The only thing people have done differently is be born in a different place, but have to deal with a lot to be where they are. OP you sound hella privileged. Too bad you can't see that.

There is increased likelihood that jobs in the US will get offshored or near shored due to this. Many companies are already using the pandemic to do this in order to save costs elsewhere.
I might be getting too far ahead to indicate that the IT resourcing will transition to S/SE Asia, mostly India like how manufacturing moved to China. That may not happen overnight but it'll trickle over which it has been doing over the last decade or so. No Democrat or Republican can stop it via EOs; the market is just too fluent yet finicky for that. This may/may not be a win for workers in India or other S/SE countries but surely for the firms and investors there.
If you were a billion dollar investor, borders mean nothing to you and a 90k job + benefits in the US is within the 20k-30k range in India or even lower. Those who were complaining about Disney layoffs, let me lol back at you.

I'm now seeing entire departments get outsourced not just "some jobs". Free market will find a way to manage those profits.

What good purpose do 1 year extensions serve?
I would agree with you if they based the salary requirements for group 1-4 on median/50th percentile, but setting the limit for high skilled roles at 95th salary percentile doesn’t make sense. Those roles are what companies struggle to fill in US market.

One year renewals? Are you kidding?

Folks have no idea how unfair the visa process is to American workers. All companies prefer to get indentured slaves on visa rather than hire a qualified American. This is for the good

Well put P1! I also am surprised that people don't realize this has been happening throughout history. There's always a "threat" posed by "outsiders", that have caused problems for the locals. Its that dangerous thinking that could lead to some terrible things. Its sad because people forget that we're all humans and all have the same goal of living a free, happy life with our loved ones and that some people are just working in a differeng country to realize that dream for themselves. I wish this fear of the "outsiders" ended. We might learn so much from each other if only everyone tried to keep an open mind
I actually agree. It won't be popular opinion this bowl but if you think about the purpose these visas are supposed to serve it makes sense. Plus its reasonable that in times of economic hardship any country wants to protect jobs for its citizens.

More workers doesn't imply higher unemployment. Believing that is called the "Lump of labor fallacy". Adding workers doesn't make it harder for existing workers to find employment- think about it, every graduating class doesn't make it harder for previous graduates to find jobs even though graduation adds 1000s of workers into the employment pool

OP, during a possible second term, you'll see more changes. Right now you'll get an extension for 1 year. All the best, if you land an RFE
So where is the news on one year renewals? I don’t see it in the article shared here.

Look up the federal register where the 147 page document was published. It has the details
