Her stepping aside gave alternates the chance to shine. Her teammates who are “starters” got the chance the shine. And she DID contribute. Her scores were factored in. With and without her, they walked away with silver. In that event, one person could do all apparatuses. Or a person could do just one. It truly is a team effort. If her head wasn’t in it, she did the right thing. This also isn’t the first time something like this has happened with her. 8 years ago, her coach forced her out of competition. This time, she was able to recognize on her own what had to be done. Good for her.

This is just idiotic. Elite athlete like Simone Biles are more mentally tough than any of the keyboard warriors on here complaining about work life balance and smaller than expected bonuses all the time. For an athlete like her there is no such thing as WLB, you give up everything - social life, relationships, time with family, just about any other passions - to train obsessively for decades to reach this point. You have to be incredibly mentally tough. This isn’t her “quitting” because she gave up, she backed out because she had reason to believe it was a genuine health risk to compete, and that another healthy gymnast could take her spot and increase the team’s chances of medaling. Which is also why your point is stupid - they have alternates in Tokyo for exactly this reason, so that if a “A team” competitor has to withdraw, someone else steps in. No one else “lost their spot” because of her, it just means another gymnast got the chance to step up and compete in her place. The exact same thing happens in lots of Olympic sports. For example, the US men’s swimming 800 free relay team had a pretty solid showing last night, and were in the mix for 2nd/3rd (Great Britain are on another level there and were clearly taking gold). Unfortunately the 3rd US leg, Zach Apple, is a phenomenal swimmer but just had an absolute stinker last night, and the US dropped to 5th. Apple was most likely anchoring the 400 medley relay at the end of the meet, but my guess now is that after that race his body is either way too fatigued, he’s mentally not there, or both. But it’s not his fault if he doesn’t swim the relay, the team brings several backups who can fight it out in prelims for the chance to swim in finals, and the team should do just fine.

SC3, I agree. Dressel was also no guarantee since he’s tapered for 100s, and his best 200 wasn’t faster than what Seli and Pieroni went. Putting Manuel on the women’s relay made sense based on her best time, but Dressel didn’t necessarily. I think they made the right call.

Another gymnast is getting to step in. The team has alternates.

like

Yes, they’re having the next highest qualified US gymnast compete in her place in the all-around. No one’s hopes and dreams are being dashed here. Biles likely didn’t know how she’d be affected until she was actually in the moment. And as soon as she realized she couldn’t perform the way her team needed her to, she stepped back to give them the best chance of getting a medal.

like

If this was a different sport, I might agree with you, but not for gymnastics. Competing when you aren’t 100% there mentally is dangerous. If you saw her vault during the team finals, she got lost while in the air and came close to seriously injuring herself on the landing. Her stepping down is a safety issue just like competing with a physical injury would be. She also did not know this was going to happen when she qualified for the individual all-around, so she couldn’t have stepped down sooner.

like

Exactly!

The US Women’s Gymnastics team would’ve never won gold without Simone so people need to stop with these ridiculous takes. She was the best chance for gold. She carries the team. She can do whatever she wants for her health. The others need to step up their game to be on her level rather than rely on her to win gold for them. There - I said it too.

likeupliftingsmart

Completely agree. The pressure these athletes are under is immense. I dont fault them at all for this. I dont think most pencil pushers can throw blame, they havent been in their shoes.

like

She can do what she wants. No different than you “taking” someone else’s position when you got hired only to quit and go to another firm because you want more money.

likesmart

Or taking a sick day, to be more precise. Someone else could have worked that day and would have wanted it more than you, probably.

like

Honestly, after what USAG did to her and to her teammates and to me and my teammates… they don’t deserve her winning them a gold medal.

Y’all just wake up in the morning and think about how you can be an absolute trash human being. You truly hate to see it.

like

From what was provided in coverage leading up to the olympics, her ‘best’ was far superior to everyone else in the world. So if she wasn’t confident she could perform at her best, why not scale back the difficulty and do something she can easily execute that would be at the level of everyone else in the competition? Quitting just tarnishes her legacy, regardless of the reason.

likefunny

Thanks for the article, but anyone who’s done sports at a high level knows there is no “scaling back” to victory at the highest. Appreciate the explanation of the twisties. Nastia Lukin said that was what was happening to Biles yesterday, but I had no idea what she was talking about. Better source of information than armchair quarterbacks.

like

…you clearly don’t respect her mental health if you stand by your first statement. They are mutually exclusive.

If you are able to do what Simone Biles can do, then go ahead and judge her. If you can’t, you have no idea what she has been through to get to her. Be open minded and listen to what she has to say.

1. Read the Washington Post article that came out today about the “twisties” she admitted to having. 2. Here’s some added perspective.

She had the twisties. Would be super dangerous for her to compete

likesmart

Just feeling like I want to add more perspective here: I balked on a tumbling pass once and dislocated my elbow. If you don’t know how horrific an injury that is, google it. If you don’t understand how big of a factor fear plays, maybe don’t comment 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

Best friend as a kid broke her ocular bone on a forward fold and had 18 hours of surgery to ensure she wasn’t blind. Terribly dangerous sport. You would encourage someone not to drive if they were emotionally distressed. You would never want a doctor to perform surgery on only a few hours of sleep. When her health and well being are at stake, absolutely she shouldn’t compete because the results could be catastrophic

like

For those talking crap about Biles, she posted stories on her IG yesterday showing that state of her abilities on the uneven bars jumping into a practice pad. She can’t even land her jumps. Not like she can’t stick the landing, she’s hitting the ground mid rotation. If done in competition, she would be seriously injured (and you could see the terrified look on her face when it happened in the competition round she ended up backing out of). She cannot get her mind and body in sync. She also extensively explains what’s going on and how it takes like 2 weeks to get back in sync. This came out of nowhere and it happens. It has happened to her. She was fine while qualifying for the olympics. She was fine will practicing in the Olympic and in the qualifying rounds. And then it hit her and it is what it is in this current moment. She took nothing from nobody. She earned her spot. It was her spot. And she had to take a step back and alternates, who earned their spot, were given an opportunity to perform. Unpopular opinion is still unpopular.

If this didn’t happen, we wouldn’t know about or understand the Twisties. Makes me appreciate these gymnasts even more.

She can still compete in the individuals.

like

SC2 she dropped out of the individual all-around competition, which is Thursday. There are also four separate individual events next week, and she has not yet said whether she will be dropping out of those.

But someone else who wanted that spot quite literally IS going to have the chance to compete? Your logic doesn’t make any sense because what you said is exactly what will happen, that’s the whole reason they bring an alternate. Also, there may be all kinds of things that we don’t know or aren’t added to the public statements, so the next time you take a mental health day and don’t share all of the intricate details with the entire world, remember that there’s always more to the picture than what is showed.

like

If her stepping down doesn't show you how severe things are..... If it really were about her not "wanting to compete" she would have just taken the point hit and downgraded her routines, competed in the all arounds, been added points for her team. Her mind is off and she could literally do lifetime damage to her body if she makes a mistake. Her vault mistake earlier this week was minor in comparison to a major accident that could happen with her skill level + not executing properly. You have an unpopular opinion because it literally has nothing to do with understanding the sport of gymnastics and you think other people owe you things simply because you exist
