In Germany, getting into college is “rationed” because it is paid for by the government in state schools. They start identifying college-bound students as early as middle school. Those who don’t show promise early are directed to trade schools and apprenticeships in cooperation with unions. In the US, we spend too much time and money on prepping kids for college who will never go.
You might want to check your biases and privilege. We can’t put everything on parents. Especially, parents who have recently immigrated here and are having difficulties adjusting to the new culture and language. And why not blame the inequitable funding of public education rather than the parents? If all schools were properly invested in, parents could then trust that public schools will serve their children. And if we stopped blaming parents and schools, and pointed fingers instead at our greed-driven, hyper-individualistic society that has systematically oppressed certain groups then blamed them for that oppression, we might be able to address root causes and not just symptoms. When the overwhelming majority of students still attend public schools, our goal needs to improve them and not shirk our responsibilities by telling parents to research better schools and move to different neighborhoods. That isn’t good for our society.
*two I’m as bad as my students. Ugh
Interesting thought. However, with the popularity of CTE programs in our state, many vocational students would miss out on technical training programs which are free. However, I do believe that juniors and seniors should be able to start college early with bridge programs. Skip AP and have concurrent enrollment.
Yes but my point is I’m tired of forcing kids to stay in the regular high school for two more years if they don’t plan to go to college and they don’t choose to go to the vocational school or take college classes. Those kids don’t want to be there and why should they be?
Not unless the job market shifts their demands to match this change. Our students need to be set up to succeed for the rest of their lives. 10th graders are still just 15-17 usually.
I agree. Our job is to sell education too. Perhaps high schools that do not have engaging CTE programs need to invest in creating them. This is not a "panacea" for all troubled students but I have seen first hand students who commit to their education because they are in the medical arts or construction or media arts or computer tech or law or business or hospitality pathways for CTE. These students train in careers AND continue their core education in high school. Students in the medical arts even wear scrubs to school on certain days as they are tasked with hands on medical training.
Are these programs being offered at your high school?
Also, connect learning with areas of interest. You may have to move from the textbook now and then and add readings/projects that "connect" with the students.
Yes we have those programs and those kids are choosing education and are excelling. My problem is with the students who aren’t choosing any education and don’t see the value in it. How am I supposed to connect to the kid who is only showing up because the truancy officer is forcing it and is causing disruptions because he doesn’t want to be here. And honestly why should he be here if he is going to take nothing away from it? Not because I’m not providing all the opportunities but because he is refusing. I’ve taught the skills that kid is going to need by 10th grade. Why am I still making him come? He can go get a job. Sure we owe it to kids to provide opportunities for them to better themselves and we give it to those who choose it but what about those who don’t want our opportunities? Let them go
