Unpopular Opinion: Lyft/ Uber drivers don't deserve all the benefits of "traditional" occupations. Drivers are not being forced to work, it's a transaction based business model.

That’s not unpopular; both Uber and Lyft agree with you

Are we being forced to work? Why do we deserve benefits?

Collective action is exactly what needs to happen in many sectors to ensure a living wage for more people. If individuals just quit, there’s no pressure for employers to change. Minimum wage laws and other labor protections are so out of date in the US. Unions are old fashioned and the third-party nature of a union complicates the equation (agency problem). But there are huge needs to improve the link between wages and productivity, to balance the power of capital owners, and provide a living wage for a much larger portion of the population. I’d love to through in access to education so that people can grow skills, but that’s pretty progressive!

Benefits and salary are based on what the labor market will bear for that profession. If taking away benefits and salary reduces Uber/Lyft’s ability to meet customer need then they should pay the benefits. There’s also the whole treat the people working for you with dignity thing.

Sounds like you may think a little too highly of yourself and job

How did you make that monumental and unfounded leap?

It’s also a highly exploitable system (abusing idle time/refusing rides) for benefits unless they move to a traditional employment model, which would include the downsides such as shifts, schedules, non-compete agreements etc.

I'm looking at the relationship between the Uber driver and Uber through the same lense I see the the contractors I staff on my projects. Would anyone say that a consulting firm should have to pay benefits for the sub-contractor when the two parties have agreed to an exchange of money (hourly rate) for services? Genuinely trying to see it from a different perspective. I agree with treating people with dignity and there should probably be greater transparency for drivers, but Uber/ Lyft are transportation clearinghouses, not chauffeur services.

It’s preferable to see people get treated well, but if you go into a gig working for Uber and Lyft and expect it to be a career with benefits for the long term, you’re a bit of a idiot.

I mean both companies are just waiting to jump on the self-driving car-train. Making them pay benefits would probably just incentivize stakeholders to invest in bringing that to life more quickly so they can follow in McDonald’s footsteps

What people deserve doesn’t really matter. If you underconpensate people they will stop working (exit the labor market for that job) until the compensation increases.

I would think all human beings “deserve” the right to life and the right to dignity. So your use of the word “deserve” implies you think corporations are all powerful beings conferring the right to life and dignity to people for being “deserving"

The right to life and dignity does not entitle you to get a specific job at a place and then make them pay you more than they offered

OP, you posted an "unpopular opinion" so naturally some people are attacking you for it. Don't take it personally.
