Mehhh
If you want to turn on your video, go ahead. Seems controlling to make everyone else turn on their video just because you work better that way
On a super real note, I don't really care if OP wants to see my stressed-out-no-sleep-my-parent-is-in-the-hospital-with-covid face. NOT happening.
You can't and WON'T pressure me into emotional labor and fake mental health for your social benefit 💁
Sounds like OP struggles with picking up on verbal cues
I think it’ll be easier to just stop being sarcastic at work
No
No
Agreed! Also as a psych nerd, feels like in our consulting industry no one cares much about improving ~psychological communication~ 😂 its all about EXPOSURE and getting that credit people yearn
I can hear that during stressful times; As someone who has been working from home for years, it makes all the difference in building relationships to be on video. Would definitely advocate for it under normal wfh circumstances.
OP must not be a woman who draws on (her) eyebrows before going outside
Microblading was the biggest disappointment ever imo.. was expensive as hell and hurt like a mf.. by the end of the year it was like i never did it
...vastly improved when I can pick up on your facial cues and body language (for all us hand talkers out there) as another way to interpret and understand what you’re saying. Plus I find it easier to hold yourself accountable from surfing the web, texting, etc. when others can see you
In addition, if I’m talking, I can read the room and use your expressions to see if I need to change any of my messaging, reiterate on anything that may cause confusion, or if I’ve just totally lost everyone else in the call
Is the only goal communication? I feel video is good for some meetings, but if the team has zoom fatigue at the end of the day, maybe let them off the hook?
Sure. I have a wireless headset. You can watch the empty room for me.
We are in a pandemic. Let’s all relax and allow people to engage the best way that they can. You don’t know people’s physical, emotional or mental state during these times.
Yeah. The term “communication” there is used broadly. With the work we do, our words matter than our expressions.
Sorry. In many cases that is not true.
I’m a huge fan of video particularly with new teams but can’t do more than 6 hrs a day in meetings at my desk... definitely flex that with some meetings on the phone pacing around my garden
100% it takes awhile to get used to it but once you do it’s hard to go back.
No.
No.
Well this is FAR more unpopular than I thought😂 I’ve really only considered this from a research perspective, but I appreciate all of the other opinions, especially those that are explaining where they’re coming from.
Consider it from a focus perspective: when you are in the room with a bunch of people, you can only focus on a small space. Video calls either switch focus quickly and often unnecessarily or cram everyone into the small focus area, which feels unnatural and exhausting. Half of nonverbal communication is ignoring the irrelevant and video calls make that very hard.
Also, the talker should be more interesting if s/he wants people to pay attention. Maybe no one likes video calls because no one likes the meeting regardless of how it is taking place.
Nope. Wrong.
my WiFi can barely handle video conferencing- I’m way more likely to drop if I have video on
Agree. Turn it on
